Job Summary
The College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences invites applications for a full-time Special Faculty/Lecturer position in the Department of Sociology and Justice Studies to begin mid- September 2023. This position will specialize in Criminal Justice. The candidate hired into this position will receive a one-year appointment for AY2023-2024 with the option for renewal based on department funding availability and need.
The Criminal Justice program is an interdisciplinary program grounded in the liberal arts. It offers classes from various academic disciplines, including sociology, political science, psychology, and criminal justice. It prepares students for vocations in law enforcement, corrections, the juvenile justice system, criminal justice investigation, and social justice. The program is a part of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, which offers opportunities for creative interdisciplinary course work and research.
The successful candidate will have teaching responsibilities involving a variety of Criminal Justice courses based on the candidate’s expertise and the needs of the department. A typical workload for this position will include 45 credits per academic year, subject to department needs. Teaching responsibilities may include the following: Participate in developing new courses, both in-person and online; Supervise internships; Advise Criminal Justice majors; Engage in curriculum review and revision of existing courses; Explore the creation of new courses based on the candidate’s expertise and the needs of the Criminal Justice major. The candidate should be ready to teach face-to-face and online course offerings. Additionally, all faculty are expected to engage in effective teaching and assessment of student learning.

Required Qualifications
  • A Master’s Degree in Criminology, Criminal Justice, Sociology, or a closely related field.
  • Teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated high degree of interest, ability, and/or experience promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply a culturally responsive and flexible approach that is supportive to the diverse needs, including universal accessibility, of our students, faculty, staff, and the public.
Preferred Qualifications
Preference may be granted to candidates who offer one or more of the following preferred qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in Criminology, Criminal Justice, Sociology, or a closely related field.
  • Active involvement in community engagement and/or ties to the local criminal justice community.
  • One or more years teaching experience at the instructor level or above.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English.
  • Experience working with first generation students and under-represented groups.

Teaching Responsibility
Teaching: typical workload for this position will involve 45 credits per academic year and the candidate may be required to teach other courses that fulfill the need of the Department and Program according to the expertise of the candidate hired into the position.
Teaching includes the following additional related responsibilities as defined in the faculty CBA:
  • Meet all scheduled classes
  • Plan, organize and inform students of course content, texts, readings, assignments, attendance regulations and methods of evaluation including grading scales
  • Schedule and attend office hours
  • Turn in grades according to established deadlines
  • Advise students who are declared majors on department, college and University requirements and career opportunities.
