The Opportunity

The Chemistry Department at the University of Central Florida (UCF) invites applications for one nine-month, non-tenure earning lecturer to coordinate and create in-person teaching labs and to create, coordinate, and teach online teaching labs. The position is anticipated to begin August 2024. There may be an opportunity for additional summer teaching.

The successful applicant must be highly organized and capable of guiding, directing, and monitoring graduate teaching assistants every semester and coordinating online and face-to-face general chemistry lab sections, along with teaching online general chemistry lab sections. In addition to contributing to teaching and coordinating laboratory courses, the successful candidate is expected to participate in continuous curriculum improvement and provide service to the department, college, and university. The Chemistry Department is dedicated to excellence in teaching and use of evidence-based teaching practices. The department has a robust chemistry education research program and encourages exploration of teaching/learning in all classes. 

The selected candidate will:

  • Coordinate and teach face-to-face and online General Chemistry teaching labs with the assistance of graduate teaching assistants (GTAs). This includes assisting in creating active learning course modules, developing strategies to add new laboratory experiments, assessing learning outcomes, coordinating course activities, and assisting with course technology, materials, and equipment needs.

  • Develop new laboratory experiments for face-to-face labs and adopt new labs for online instruction.

  • Assist in increasing the number of online labs offered.

  • Assist the graduate program coordinator with GTA orientation.

  • Mentor GTAs, lead and schedule GTA meetings, ensuring GTAs have completed required trainings each semester, provide feedback and evaluate GTA performance, and monitor graduate teaching assistants’ activity.

  • Maintain grade rolls for the laboratory.

Minimum Qualifications:

A doctorate in chemistry or a closely related science from an accredited institution is required by the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to candidates with a strong grasp of general chemistry and experience teaching general chemistry laboratory in-person and online.
