Job Summary
The Biology Department at Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA is invites applications for a one-year, fixed-term, non-tenure-track faculty position for the 2022-2023 academic year. We are looking for colleague who is committed to pursuing excellence in teaching by creating engaging, inclusive learning environments for undergraduate students in molecular biology and genetics. Teaching obligations include lecture and laboratory sections of our upper-division Molecular Biology course (fall semester), a lecture section of our 200-level Genetics course (spring semester), laboratory sections of our Phage Discovery laboratory (spring semester), and lecture sections of our introductory course, Information Flow in Biological systems (fall and spring semesters). Total teaching load will be 12 contact hours each semester. Ideal candidates will have experience teaching undergraduates from a variety of backgrounds and identities, including those historically marginalized in the sciences (e.g., first-generation students, students from low-income families, students of color, LGBTQ+ students, students with disabilities).
 
The department will provide support for developing engaging, inclusive, interactive courses that meet our learning objectives. The Phage Discovery Lab course has an established curriculum and staff support for acquiring and distributing supplies to students. The Information Flow course is a multi-section course taught by a number of faculty from the department, who can share resources, experience, and advice to help our new colleague be successful. In addition, Gonzaga’s Center for Teaching and Advising provides regular faculty development and education opportunities, including an optional year-long orientation for new faculty (including lecturers).

Essential Functions
  • Teach 12 contact hours of courses per semester (8 credit hours—two lecture sections and two lab sections.) Teaching responsibilities include upper-division Molecular Biology with lab, intermediate-level Genetics, introductory-level Information Flow in Biological Systems, and Phage Discovery Lab. 
Minimum Qualifications
  • A Ph.D. in Biology or a relevant discipline
  • At least one year of experience teaching undergraduate students in molecular biology and genetics
Desired Qualifications
  • Evidence of engaging, inclusive teaching at the undergraduate level that includes designing and teaching both lecture and laboratory courses. 
  • Evidence of effectiveness in teaching and mentoring undergraduate students with diverse backgrounds, abilities, and identities, including those historically underrepresented in the sciences
