Position Description:

The University of Iowa program in American Sign Language invites applications for a non-tenure-track lecturer position for the 2024-2025 academic year, renewable for an additional two years (2025-2026 and 2026-2027) and then renewable in three-year increments pending positive teaching reviews and college authorization.  Responsibilities include teaching six courses a year (20-24 s.h.). This could be six sections of ASL per year (maximum 20 students per section) using an immersion curriculum, or a combination of language and specialty courses taught in ASL (such as Interpreting or Deaf Studies courses). The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to program development, including curriculum and materials development, organizing conversation hours and other co-curricular activities; to maintain an active professional presence in the field; and develop and maintain an appropriate service portfolio. Summer employment possible if desired, dependent upon program needs and resources. Starting Date: August 21, 2024.

Education Requirement:

  • Bachelor's Degree in ASL, Deaf Studies, Interpreting, or related field

Required Qualifications:

  • Fluency in ASL

  • Teaching experience and/or equivalent experience (teaching assistantship, teaching practicum, teaching workshops/conference presentations, mentoring interpreters, etc.)

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in ASL Education, Deaf Studies, Interpreting, or related field

  • Two years’ teaching experience at the college level

  • ASLPI minimum score of 3.5 and/or SLPI minimum rating of Advanced and/or American Sign Language Teacher Association (ASLTA) certification and/or National Interpreting Certification (NIC)

  • Demonstrated ability to offer upper-level ASL language courses and advanced courses such as ASL/English Interpreting, ASL Linguistics, ASL Literature, Deaf Culture, or Deaf Studies.
