Job Description

The Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University—one of the nation’s premier mass communication schools—is seeking an Instructional Technologist to ensure the successful delivery of its courses. Focusing on immersion (in-person) courses with some work in online courses and continuing/executive education, the instructional technologist will champion our LMS (Canvas) and other learning technologies, working with faculty to design seamless learning experiences and innovative course content. The ideal candidate is a self-motivated, proactive, collaborative Canvas master who is passionate about implementing objective-based learning experiences.

Essential Duties

• Collaboratively plan, design, develop and revise for-credit course environments and course materials within Canvas to meet University and department standards.
• Champion the use of Canvas across all courses, and serve as the primary Canvas knowledge resource.
• Manage and update Canvas Blueprints and other course templates and knowledge bases.
• Identify and communicate contextual best practices for applying teaching and learning theories to curriculum design.
• Coordinate with the academic assessment liaison to ensure effective assessment data collection and optimize for student success.
• Maintain and expand face-to-face and online faculty training, workshop and seminar offerings.
• Develop training materials including online tutorials and other multimedia materials to assist faculty with instructional design principles and the use of online teaching and learning tools.
• Collaborate and build relationships with faculty, working in tandem with instructors to unite their expertise with learning technology, pedagogy and curriculum.
• Champion accessibility and ensure ADA compliance across course materials.
• Recommend effective and creative use of technologies to enhance instruction and create new and inclusive learning environments.
• Seek and maintain current knowledge on emerging technologies that have potential value for online teaching and learning.
• Apply best practices in content development, image and video editing and presentation tools to develop custom products to meet user needs.
• Provide technology support for online teaching and learning products used by faculty, students and staff.
• Liaise with ASU instructional technology, instructional design and IT teams.
  

Minimum Qualifications

Associates degree in Technology, Instructional Design, Communications, or closely related AND two (2) years web content, graphic design or electronic publishing; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

• Experience in designing, developing, implementing and revising for-credit in-person or online course environments and course materials, ideally in higher education
• Mastery of the Canvas learning management system, including Blueprints and course templates
• Experience in applying learning theories to the practice of online course design and development
• Experience in designing, developing, and delivering workshops and training
• Experience in designing and developing training materials, including job aids, online tutorials, and other multimedia materials
• Experience in project management (managing time, establishing priorities, distributing responsibilities, meeting milestones and deliverables)
• Experience in researching and resolving technology issues
• Experience integrating best practices in inclusive learning design, especially in serving students with disabilities
• Evidence of effective communication in visual, oral and written forms
• Demonstrated knowledge of academic assessment practices
• Demonstrated knowledge of journalism, media and/or mass communication
• Evidence of a Master's degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, or a related area
  

Working Environment

Our office is located at 555 North Central Ave., Phoenix.

• Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse
• Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts
