Harvard Library has come together to develop university-wide policies for collections and user services in support of research, teaching, and learning.  The Harvard Library is building on its leadership position established through its extraordinary collections, to grow in new ways which revolutionize the engagement of library staff in research, teaching, and learning. 
 
The Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS), the largest division of Harvard University, is dedicated to being at the forefront of teaching and learning and fostering cutting edge research and discovery. The FAS Libraries constitute the largest sector of the Harvard Library. FAS librarians support teaching and learning for Harvard College’s 6,700 undergraduate students and 4,000 graduate students.
 
Harvard Library is launching a team-based approach to supporting faculty and student needs in science and engineering. As part of this framework, the new Cabot Science Library, opening in Spring 2017, includes video studios, multimedia production facilities, collaboration spaces, an active-learning instruction room and a dynamic space called the Discovery Bar. 
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The Learning Technologies Specialist for the Sciences (LTSS) will lead the design and implementation of programs at the Discovery Bar, the Instruction Room and Media Studios. The LTSS needs to create new connections with research labs, academic departments and academic support providers throughout the sciences and engineering entities across campus. The LTSS will support faculty, staff, undergraduates and graduate students with instructional design, educational technology integration and pedagogical innovation. The LTSS reports to the Director of Science and Engineering Library Services and manages one full-time staff person as well as graduate and undergraduate student workers.
The new spaces in Cabot provide an opportunity to redefine campus relationships with Harvard Library. Planning discussions have included ways to integrate with course assignments on video creation, graphic design, 3d printing and web/blog design. The LTSS conducts workshops, selects and recruits guest speakers and organizes an active calendar of events. The LTSS connects with colleagues in other libraries to plan larger events. The LTSS conducts individual and small-group training so that faculty and students can fully utilize the built-in technology of different spaces in Cabot Science Library. 
The LTSS advances the culture of teaching and learning for professional development, curricular enhancement, and academic support. The LTSS understands effective library instruction as a critical practice, driven by inquiry, experimentation, reflection, and collaboration. The LTSS promotes pedagogy that is inclusive, learner-centered, and research-based. 
This position is focused on the intersection between different technologies used for teaching and learning. The Instruction Room for example includes up to 8 displays and a large number of wireless and wired sources; it can support a wide variety of teaching practices. The ideal candidate needs significant experience with AV systems, traditional IT and pedagogical support.
The LTSS participates actively in the intellectual life and administrative activities of the Harvard Library, serving on committees, working groups, and other activities promoting the President’s vision of “One University,” and is expected to participate fully in librarianship, conducting reference, outreach, library instruction and liaison activities.

  • MLIS or equivalent degree from an ALA-accredited program, or Master’s degree in Educational Technology or Instructional Design. 

  • At least five years of work experience relevant to the position

  • Expertise in teaching technological skills to adults

  • Experience designing professional development programs for higher education

  • Experience with managing outreach, scheduling and assessment for public programs

  • Comfort in learning, using, trouble-shooting and teaching others to use new technologies including video production equipment, audiovisual equipment and projection equipment.

  • Ability to select, implement and evaluate educational technology tools in context  

  • Demonstrated familiarity and ability to articulate current issues of pedagogy

  • Strong project management skills, and comfort with a matrix environment

  • Strong public service orientation, with library or customer service experience.

  • A commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a diverse population.    

  • Bachelor’s degree or advanced degree in science and/or engineering preferred

  • Experience with Canvas and/or other popular courseware systems

  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: research data management, video creation, data presentation tools, 3D printing, graphic design and new media

  • Experience supervising staff and/or graduate students

  • Prior experience with coaching / training librarians and graduate students
     

Duties & Responsibilities continued:

The LTSS will be part of a team for research data management services through the office of the Director of Library Digital Strategies and Innovation. The LTSS collaborates with the science and engineering librarians and the Lamont Library Media Lab. The LTSS collaborates with campus entities that support faculty and students including Harvard University Information Technology (HUIT)’s Academic Technology Group (ATG), the Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning, the Harvard Initiative for Learning and Teaching (HILT) and the Teaching and Learning Consortium (TLC).
