CONTEXT OF THE JOB: 

Student Services for Athletes (SSA) promotes student-athletes’ success by offering a broad array of services that assist with their academic and personal adjustment to the University of Delaware. The program provides critical student services including counseling/advising, tutoring, and academic assistance to student-athletes. As a part of the Student-Athlete Success Team, SSA also helps to integrate the academic and social experiences of student athletes and fosters their academic, career and personal development.  In addition, as a member of the Division of Student Life, SSA embraces the mission and values of the division and works closely with the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation Services in upholding and embracing their departmental mission of “Inspiring Greatness Together.” 

 Under the general direction of the Associate Director of Student Services for Athletes, the Learning Specialist will provide direct academic support and coaching to at-risk student-athletes and guidance to SSA staff also working with this population. This position will serve as the primary liaison with the Office of Disability Support Services and will assist students with diagnosed learning disabilities and/or accommodation needs. This position will also coordinate and facilitate initial screening and diagnostic testing, if needed, of new student-athletes and facilitate testing of current student-athletes in consultation with SSA staff and Sports Medicine. 

 MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: 

• Provide academic support to a caseload of at-risk student-athletes including those with diagnosed learning disabilities and/or accommodation needs. 
• Coordinate and facilitate initial screening and diagnostic testing, if needed, for new student-athletes. 
• Evaluate documentation to determine best practices to provide academic support to assigned student-athletes. 
• Formulate academic success plans for academically at-risk student-athletes. 
• Serve as the liaison with the Office of Disability Support Services. 
• Provide weekly reports to SSA staff and coaches regarding academic progress of assigned student-athletes. 
• Coordinate the supervision and reporting of the student-athletes’ study hall hours to coaches. 
• Provide training to SSA staff and tutors to best accommodate each student-athlete’s educational needs. 
• Assist sport programs in recruiting student-athletes, as needed. 
• Travel with teams with larger caseload of at-risk student-athletes, as necessary. 
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned. 

 QUALIFICATIONS: 

• Bachelor’s degree and three years related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Degree in education, special education, school psychology, clinical psychology or related discipline preferred. Master’s degree is preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

• Experience in secondary or post-secondary educational setting. 
• Experience in reviewing educational evaluations and assessing individualized learning needs. 
• Knowledge of a wide range of learning strategies and study skills development. 
• Knowledge and experience working with individuals with diagnosed learning disabilities, including ADHD, learning disorders, communication disorders, and/or processing disorders. 
• Experience working with a diverse population; demonstrated professionalism and cultural competence with awareness of and sensitivity to racial, cultural, religious, socio-economic, gender and sexual orientation diversity. 
• Effective interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. 
• Knowledge of Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) guidelines and regulations. 
• Demonstrated understanding and consideration of the differing needs and concerns of individuals with varying identities, cultures, and backgrounds.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Ability to occasionally work evening and/or weekend hours.
