SummaryReporting to the Director of the Learning Commons, the Learning Specialist develops, coordinates and implements comprehensive academic support services for students with learning and attention challenges. Works with students with learning disabilities and prioritizes tasks following established ADA requirements, departmental and university policy. Develops and implements individualized learning plans, workshops for a defined group of BGSU students. Evaluates and monitors the academic progress of program students on a continual basis and assists with skill development. Works collaboratively with offices and academic departments to coordinate efforts for student success.
Full-time 10-month administrative staff position. Full benefits package available.
Essential Functions- Develop, coordinate and implement individualized academic support plans for identified students including the assessment and evaluation of individual students to determine learning needs and additional support. Conduct one-on-one academic meetings with a caseload of students teaching learning strategies and addressing academic needs.
- Communicate on a regular basis with faculty to monitor students’ academic progress and attendance in each course and communicate any concerns in a timely fashion to each student and respective family member(s). Act as a resource person and provide training as needed for students, tutors and staff in the areas of study skills, learning strategies and disability identification.
- Serve as liaison to Accessibility Services and monitor follow-through with accommodations and services though the office and within the classroom. Work with academic advisors to review students’ class scheduling, degree plans, tutorial services, university academic standing and progress toward degree and graduation.
- Develop and facilitate workshops for small groups of students on a variety of study skills topics. Assist with orientation, summer programs, recruiting and other programs as assigned by the Director of The Learning Commons.
- Responsible for all phases of the design, implementation, delivery and assessment of academic support services to FLY students offered by the Learning Commons. Increase retention rates by designing interventions using high achieving undergraduates and graduate students tutors hired and trained by the Learning Commons Tutor Coordinator.
- Represent the Learning Commons on various university committees and professional organizations. Participates in outreach and recruitment and retention initiatives on behalf of the Learning Commons (i.e. New Student Orientation, President’s Day, Office of Admissions Recruitment Fairs).
Minimum QualificationsThe following Degree is required:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education, Education, Education Psychology, or Applied Behavioral Science. Degree must be conferred at time of application.
- Master’s degree
The following Experience is required:
- 1 year working with students in an academic setting
- 1 year of student supervision or instruction
Additional InformationKnowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of regulations and laws associated with ADA and accommodations for people with disability.
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion and according to FERPA guidelines.
- Knowledge and expertise in effective learning strategies, assessment tools, motivational techniques and study skill development.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including skill in writing memos/reports and presenting or teaching in workshop/classroom environments.
- Ability to interact with individuals of various social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds.
- Strong listening, analytical, and problem-solving skills in work with academic staff and students. Ability to interact collaboratively and effectively with other staff, students, academic advisors, faculty and the university community.
