School/College/Division Description
The College of General Studies offers an array of classes that lead to an Associate of Arts and Sciences (AAS) degree and satisfy general education requirements for bachelor’s degrees at UWM and other UW System campuses. The college offers courses on UWM’s campuses in Milwaukee and Waukesha. It was created in 2018 when UW-Waukesha and UW-Washington County joined with UWM as part of the University of Wisconsin System’s reorganization of the two-year campuses formerly known as UW Colleges. The College of General Studies includes three departments — Arts and Humanities, Math and Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences and Business. The departments offer classes in more than 29 subject areas.
Job Summary
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee College of General Studies is seeking a Writing Specialist for the First-Year Bridge program. The First-Year Bridge program is a student support service/program for students who are admitted to UW-Milwaukee on a conditional basis due to their previous academic performance. Through First-Year Bridge, students are connected to a comprehensive network of academic resources to assist in their successful completion of the program. The Writing Specialist provides individualized co-curricular support in college writing, reading, and research for all levels of writing and reading students active in the First-Year Bridge program. The Writing Specialist may also be assigned teaching of one course per semester (e.g., CGS ENG 101, CGS ENG 102, CGS LEC 101, or CGS LEC 105). The Writing Specialist works collaboratively with other program staff and the Writing and Reading instructors in the First-Year Bridge program.
This is a fixed-term, renewable academic staff position appointed at 100% full-time equivalence (FTE) for the academic year (9 months) and reports directly to the First-Year Bridge Program Director. Contract starts August 19, 2024. Fall classes begin September 5, 2024. New staff orientation is scheduled within the contract period.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Graduate degree in English, Writing, or a related field
  • Experience in teaching or tutoring writing
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with the operation of co-requisite support and/or developmental education programs
  • Experience teaching developmental reading and/or writing courses
  • Successful experience working with underrepresented and diverse populations
Target Salary Range $39,000 - $41,000 (Final salary offer contingent upon skills, knowledge, and abilities as they relate to the position)
