Job Description
Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads – both students and employers – for 50 years.  It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force.  TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 28,000 students in 2019-20. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions.  The college had 3,203 graduates in 2019-2020, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 36% enrolled at TCC. TCC’s institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. 
Job Description Summary 
Learning Assistants assist in academic achievement by meeting with students to clarify learning objectives and work on study skills. Learning Assistants serves as a supplement to classroom or online teaching. Learning Assistants assist deans, faculty, and Learning Assistant Services Manager in supporting student success initiatives of Tidewater Community College. 
 
Function 
• Meet with students on a one-to-one, small-group, drop-in, or online tutoring format(s) to provide learning assistance. 
• Learning Assistants also partner with instructors to offer outreach-learning opportunities in the classroom and team up to offer course relevant workshops. 
• Tutor students enrolled at TCC in various academic subjects. 
• Tutor students in basic computer literacy to include email account set-up, create a word document, saving a document and navigating Blackboard. 
• Learning Assistants must maintain familiarity with campus resources available to students. 
• Maintain a resourceful supply of course relevant handouts in learning assistance centers, if necessary. 
• Attend mandatory tutor-training sessions as required by the Campus Coordinator. 
• Offer assistance with developing study strategies (textbooks, handbooks, online resources, etc.) to students requesting tutoring services. 
• Demonstrate experience expressing patience, encouragement, and empathy to students having difficulty. 
• Assist with additional duties as assigned.
Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications
Working knowledge of course content. Effective oral, written and technical communication skills. Ability to effectively communicate with students what Learning Assistants provide as educational support assistants. Contextualize transferable, academic study, and learning strategies into collaborative learning sessions. Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with FERPA. Ability to work as a team member. Demonstrate excellent customer service and communication skills. Experience in working with people from varying educational, cultural, and social backgrounds. Excellent level of responsibility, reliability, and punctuality.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s Degree in Chemistry or a Master’s degree with 18 graduate semester hours in Chemistry. Teaching experience in Chemistry. Previous experience working in a Learning Assistant/Tutoring position.
