Job Description

The W. P. Carey School of Business seeks a Lead System Analyst, Sr. who performs professional work in the design, development, implementation, operation and maintenance of computer and business systems to meet user needs. This position requires a wide breath of technical knowledge that can be used to approve technical solution designs to a variety of needs. Work typically involves a combination of providing expert advice and troubleshooting on groups of software products or an entire systems, assessing, planning for, and implementing new technology, administering and maintaining shared-user systems, communicating with users and user groups on technology topics, and providing instruction. This position will be a lead contributor to the team also be responsible for the management of student staff assigned to the technical team and assist the manager with managing workflow and operations for the Technology Strategy and Operations group.

Essential Duties

  • Provides leadership to a system project team for system development, analysis, design, review and testing
  • Maintains a high degree of technical knowledge and expertise on a group of technology products or on a technology platform through research, personal use, vendor presentations, and training
  • Leads support for the product group platform, including publicity, training, expert trouble-shooting and advice, vendor interface and advocacy.
  • Performs the design, development, implementation, operation and maintenance of computer and business systems to meets user needs
  • Uses applications software such as distributed network systems, database management systems, Web page development tools, desktop publishing tools, and presentation tools to meet user needs
  • Advises customers on standard tools and combinations of tools that are available or can be purchased or developed to meet specific needs
  • Configures, installs and upgrades computer hardware and software, which may include computer network hardware and software
  • Tests newly set up equipment to assure that it works in coordination with other associated hardware and software products
  • Identifies causes of problems when hardware and software are not operating properly and takes appropriate action
  • Repairs or resolves a wide variety of problems and confers with or escalates problems to vendors, contractors, or others in the university to assure that resolution is reached
  • Coordinates with other information technology organizations including the central IT organization to ensure optimal use and efficiency of computer and related resources
  • Collaborates and teams with others on a variety of technology and technology support projects
  • Develops and improves user systems procedures, and prepares systems documentation
  • In the review of existing systems and processes, applies the techniques and principles of process and procedure reengineering in the design and development of new systems and process
  • Where possible develops and recommends alternative solutions to existing systems and processes
  • Mentors, trains, schedules, and leads student staff responsible for delivering various routine services

  • Develops and delivers instructional training on the use of supported technology products and systems, and provides personalized instruction one-on-one to meet specialized needs
  • Develops and prepares operational plans and reports on project status
  • Prepares project plans, which include staffing requirements
  • Monitors project time reporting and prepares status reports
  • Establishes and maintains effective communications with customers, other technology specialists, and vendors about services
  • Assists in the development of long-range goals and short-range objectives
  • Writes and/or updates detailed user documentation and manuals for operational applications, including data flow illustrations; distributes or arranges distribution of system documentation
  • Conducts special projects/research as requested

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Information Technology or related field AND four (4) years experience providing information technology services; OR, Eight (8) years experience providing related information technology services, OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved. Certificates from recognized programs that indicate mastery tools and techniques relevant to the assignment may substitute for up to six months of experience.


Desired Qualifications

  • Experience managing and supporting servers (virtual, physical, cloud based) throughout the life cycle from deployment to end of life
  • Experience managing a computing environment including various types of endpoints, security administration, and application deployment methods
  • Experience with computer programming languages (SQL, PHP, Python, PowerShell, HTML5, and/or Bash, ColdFusion)
  • Experience with AWS, Azure or Google Cloud platforms
  • Demonstrated knowledge of AWS, cloud networking concepts such as Virtual Private Clouds, Security Groups, Routing Tables, Subnets and Internet Gateways
  • Experience in principles of Infrastructure as code, CICD, and version control tools (Git, Jenkins, Terraform)
  • Experience in database concepts (MySQL, Postgres)
  • Experience in database management tools and applications
  • Experience with project management standards and agile practices. JIRA experience strongly preferred
  • Experience in analyzing and generating technical solution design proposals and work with technical resources to select an appropriate design based on customer use case and overall technology strategy
  • Experience in supervising employees within a wide variety of technical expertise
  • Evidence of effective communication skills including software/system architecture diagrams and other forms of documentation
  • Experience working with or designing academic learning environments strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated knowledge of website application design, development, and maintenance practices

Working Environment

Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, standing and walking; frequent physical demands may include stooping, bending, crawling under/around objects, reaching, lifting and pushing objects of varying weights up to 50 pounds; regularly required to work in cramped and enclosed areas and exposure to variations in temperature when deploying equipment.
