Position Summary
The Operations & Facilities Management Department at Washington University School of Medicine is committed to delivering a comprehensive range of services to support the medical campus.
We oversee maintenance and operations for 65 buildings, covering more than 10.1 million gross square feet of space. This includes the 11-story, 609,000-square-foot neuroscience research building, which houses one of the world’s highest concentrations of neuroscientists. Our responsibilities include operational and administrative support, strategic planning, and project management.
Furthermore, as the School of Medicine continues to expand its presence both on and off campus in areas such as teaching, clinical care, and research, our team remains instrumental in ensuring the seamless delivery of clinical care, advancing research initiatives, and facilitating educational endeavors.
Serves as a primary first responder (armed) to all life safety and protection of property, emergency, and non-emergency incidents on campus, including rendering emergency medical assistance or general first aid. In the absence of supervisory personnel, assumes overall command in a variety of tactical situations. Coordinates with internal and external partners and makes notifications to campus leadership as needed. Must be prepared to deal with a variety of complex and ever-changing situations (crisis intervention, apprehension of criminal suspects, serious injuries, etc.), make quick decisions, and take action. Needs to be able to utilize a variety of tools and techniques to resolve the situations and accurately and thoroughly record information for the official University record. Performs all duties of a Response Officer II and serves as a leader and mentor.


Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Responds to or react to emergency and non-emergency incidents (medical, law enforcement, injury/accident, etc.) on campus. Coordinates all team activity in the course of a shift (roll call, duty assignments, shift incident summary, etc.)  When not on assignment, patrols the University properties. Takes action or makes a note for follow-up of any safety and security issues. Provides Emergency Management support during larger-scale incidents.
  • Receives/compiles information for incident reports and conducts initial and follow-up investigations, as assigned. Maybe seconded to the investigations section for special assignments. May be assigned to lead a variety of other administrative and logistical functions in support of the patrol division.
  • Provides necessary follow-up (transports to a medical facility, notifies proper authorities, and undertakes any other necessary coordination) for faculty, staff, students, and visitors after immediate resolution of an incident.  Apprehends criminal suspects for on-view or reported criminal activity.
  • May serve as a Field Training Officer or instructor. Fulfills informal leadership duties in the absence of supervisors and managers. Provides essential feedback on officer development to supervisors/managers for evaluations and continued training.
  • Conducts building checks, which include checking access control devices and door locks and proactively looking for any possible safety or security hazards. Uses problem-solving skills to resolve issues found during building checks.
  • Assists Medical Center personnel and visitors with directions and provide escorts when requested. Partners with customers in assigned geographical areas and assist them in resolving multi-department issues.
  • Takes possession of found property, attempting to locate the owner, and securing property according to established procedure.
  • Enforces parking regulations and provides support to the Transportation Office as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice or related field.
  • Three years of experience as an armed Security Officer in a professional security organization. 
  • Applicable Law enforcement or Military training.
  • Licensed Missouri EMT-B. Certification as an advanced Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Member.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, respect for colleagues and stakeholders, unwavering integrity in all actions, dedicated pursuit of excellence, and a track record of consistent dedication to achieving organizational goals.
  • Ability to work independently or with minimal supervision. 
  • Ability to work as part of a team. 
  • Excellent written and communication skills. 
  • Advanced computer skills to complete department incident reports.


Required Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in criminal justice or related field.
  • One years’ experience as an armed officer in an academic environment or a civilian/military police setting.
  • Experience may be substituted for formal education or training at department discretion.
  • Obtain and maintain certification for Taser, OC Spray, collapsible baton, and handcuffs.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an armed St. Louis Metropolitan Security License within 30 days of hire. 
  • Must obtain and maintain a Missouri Class E or Illinois Class D Driver’s license within 30 days of hire.

Salary Range
$22.92 - $35.49 / Hourly

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
