About the Department

The Center for Translational Data Science (CTDS) at the University of Chicago is a research center pioneering the discipline of translational data science to advance biology, medicine, and environmental research. We architect ecosystems of large-scale commons of research data, computing resources, applications, tools, and services for the broader research community to use data at scale to pursue scientific inquiry and accelerate discovery. These growing data commons offer petabytes of rich research data to scientists across the world. This at-will position is wholly or partially funded by contractual grant funding which is renewed under provisions set by the grantor of the contract. Employment will be contingent upon the continued receipt of these grant funds and satisfactory job performance.

Job Summary:

Lead Platform Engineers for various and unanticipated worksites throughout the U. S (HQ: Chicago, IL). Lead team to achieve project objectives and provide technical mentorship. Responsible for responding, triaging, and resolving production system issues across multiple projects, including open-source projects. Managing activities of a complex and challenging nature with decisions having a large impact on the team or cross multiple teams. Acts as a technical consultant and resource for faculty research, teaching, and/or administrative projects. Design and implementation of top priority technical tasks and timely delivery of such tasks, meeting the required level of quality. Manage activities of a complex and challenging nature, including design and implementation of large systems and/or core components. Develop full stack web applications, infrastructure, configuration and deployment automation. As Scrum master, responsible for leading deliverables using Agile methodologies.  Organize backlog grooming sessions, scrums and retrospectives. Management of secure platforms on public cloud and operation of large scale data automation systems. Automate and run workflow engine SaaS for data science. Maintain a high performance computing cluster for bioinformatics pipelines. Actively mentor Junior Platform and Software Engineers.  Collaborate with Software, bioinformatics, user-services and operations teams to deliver cross functional projects.  Build a team including recruiting, interviewing, and onboarding new Platform Engineers. Design, develop, deploy, run and maintain CI/CD pipelines.  Design, develop, deploy and maintain tools for monitoring, logging and alerting.   Technical Environment: AWS, GCP, scripting with bash and python; Kubernetes, configuration management tools; programming Python, JavaScript, React, Golang; AWS; Docker; monitoring solutions; PostgreSQL; NoSQL databases; Linux/Unix based operating systems; and Git.

Education, Experience, or Certifications:  

Education:  

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science or related field plus 7 years of experience in the job offered as an Engineer or in software engineering/development required. Required Skills: 5 years with each: scripting with bash and python; CI/CD; configuration management tools; 3 years with each: developing infrastructure, configuration and deployment automation; Kubernetes; developing full stack web applications with Python, JavaScript/React;  management of secure platforms on public cloud; operation of large scale data automation systems; automate and run workflow engine SaaS for data science; Docker; monitoring solutions; PostgreSQL; NoSQL databases; 2 years with: programming using Python, Golang or JavaScript; AWS; Experience: contributing to open-source projects; Agile methodologies; Linux/Unix based operating systems; Git. May telecommute. Background check including review of conviction history required. (*3-year university study in Information Systems, Computer Science or related field plus 8 years of progressive experience in the job offered as an Engineer or in software engineering/development also acceptable).
