Lead Mechanical Engineer

Job Summary

The Lead Mechanical Engineer will provide mechanical project engineering support through review, research, analysis, design, communication, coordination, and field observation activities.  Provide assistance to ensure mechanical project scope is executed successfully and in accordance with the customer's desired results and the University's standards.  Work with project managers for resolution of engineering issues on projects.  Review and comment on engineering work of outside architectural/engineering firms.  Work with all members of the project team through planning, design, construction, and warranty.  Provide post-project facility engineering consultation.  Provide design, analysis, and field engineering support of select projects and Physical Facilities programs. Provide facilities engineering support to operations and maintenance staff and other departments upon request.  Provide condition assessment support for the building condition assessment program.  Provide support activities in conjunction with development and upkeep of University design standards.

 

As the Principal Mechanical Engineer you will provide master level mechanical project engineering support through review, research, analysis, design, communication, coordination, and field observation activities.  As well as the duties for the Lead Mechanical Engineer.

 

This is a dual level posting where the hiring manager will determine the level according to the desired candidate.

What We're Looking For:

What We’re Looking For:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or engineering technology with a mechanical emphasis required
  • Indiana PE Registration Required or ability to attain within 90 days
  • Minimum Four (4) years post-PE registration experience in the field of mechanical engineering required. (Equivalent combination of education and experience considered.) Design, analysis, condition assessment, project engineering, and facilities engineering experience in building mechanical systems required 

 

As the Principal Mechanical Engineer you will need  the above and below:

  • Minimum Eight (8) years post-PE registration experience in the field of mechanical engineering required. (Equivalent combination of education and experience considered.) Design, analysis, condition assessment, project engineering, and facilities engineering experience in building mechanical systems required 

 

Preferred:

  • Experience with HVAC system commissioning and controls concepts and strategies desired
  • Experience with energy efficient design concepts desired
  • AutoCAD or Microstation drafting experience desired


 

Skills Needed:

 

For both the Lead and Principal Mechanical Engineer:

  • Thorough and advanced knowledge of engineering principles and techniques of engineering planning; of equipment and materials used in engineering operations; of specialized subjects used in the fields of engineering, such as mathematics, statistics, mechanics, power, physics, and chemistry; and of strength of materials required 
  • Ability to:
    • relate abstract ideas to actual needs and adopt an effective course of action required 
    • establish and maintain effective working relationships with others required
    • exercise sound engineering judgment and exhibit solid leadership to establish well-reasoned solutions required
  • Demonstrated consistent ability to satisfactorily perform duties equivalent to those required of the Mechanical Engineer Lead position required
  • Demonstrated ability to satisfactorily perform self-directed activities of high complexity without engineering oversight, guidance, and assistance required
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required
  • Ability is required to apply engineering principles to practical engineering problems; to use engineering equipment and tools, including computer applications; to make, read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications
