FULL-TIME/ PERMANENT LEAD FISH HATCHERY SPECIALIST FISH HATCHERY SPECIALIST 3 (FHS3) FALLERT CREEK HATCHERY Hatcheries Division Kalama, Washington – Cowlitz County  STANDBY DUTIES ARE CURRENTLY ASSIGNED HOUSING IS PROVIDED Are you a fish hatchery specialist passionate about protecting, restoring, and enhancing fish, wildlife and their habitats? If so, then this may be the opportunity you’ve been waiting for!  As a Fish Hatchery Specialist, you’ll assist in leading a crew in the rearing of fish that contribute to the sport, tribal and commercial fisheries in the Puget Sound and the Pacific Ocean. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) serves Washington’s citizens by protecting, restoring and enhancing fish and wildlife and their habitats, while providing sustainable and wildlife related recreational and commercial opportunities. Duties Our Lead Fish Hatchery Specialists -  Perform Fish Culture Duties: Carries out assignments as a working leader. Identifies and communicates opportunities to improve fish culture practices. Projects and monitors fish growth and feed requirements. Monitors egg and fish production. Performs fish inventories, splits, grading, marking trailer inventories, weight samples and plants. Plans and coordinates rearing densities, intra-and inter-facility transfers of fish, and releases to meet short-and long-range program goals. Lead a crew of Hatchery Specialists: Carries out assignments as a working leader. Monitors projects/activities to ensure completion in a timely manner. Demonstrate, instruct, or train others in methods, procedures and how to complete tasks. Plans daily and cyclic hatchery work schedules. Reviews and interprets the Future Brood Document. Facility Maintenance and Operation: Ensures that working components of the fish hatchery are kept in good condition (i.e., pumps & motors, vehicles, alarms, generators, flashlights). Ensures timely repairs to facility and infrastructure often requiring the ability to metal weld, cut and drill. Management in the operation of fish traps and ladders. Monitors water quality, quality rearing environments. Actively identifies safety hazards and acts or recommends remedies as appropriate. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work Setting, including hazards: Work is performed outside in all weather conditions.  Typically, the employee in this position will be working outside about 250 days a year and usually based on the remoteness of the facility will be working by himself or herself about half the time.  This employee will be required to work in all sorts of weather conditions whether it is raining, snowing, sunny, dark, cold, or hot.    At times the Fish Hatchery Specialist 3 position will be required to repetitively lift at least 50 lbs. Schedule: Saturday – Friday, 40hrs/week. Typically, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30p.m.  The work hours can vary greatly for this position at different time of the year depending on the work schedule and weather conditions.  Standby:   Standby duties are currently assigned with a response time of 15-30 minutes.  Standby entails the employee being responsible for overseeing the facility for the remaining 16 hours of the day after the regular 8-hour shift. While on standby this position will work ten (10) days on and be off four (4) days. Standby is a requirement for all positions in the Fish Hatchery Specialist series.  Management may determine it is necessary to assign standby to accomplish the goals and objectives of the agency and as necessary to protect the resources of the agency and if assigned, it will be a requirement of the position. Housing:  Housing is provided for this position. Travel Requirements: Travel may be required for short periods to accomplish agency goals and required training. Tools and Equipment: Power tools, hand tools, lawn care equipment, tractors, forklifts, welding equipment, egg picking machines, weight scales, water sampling instruments, transport trucks, passenger vehicles, adult fish pumps, adult fish counters, Coded Wire Tag (CWT) identification equipment, trash pumps, pressure washers, diesel generators, small gas engine, computers, and software. Customer Interactions: Employee will interact with small community groups and individual constituents on a regular basis who visit the hatchery to answer questions and give tours. Qualifications
Qualifications REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Closely related qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-by-year basis. One year of experience as a Fish Hatchery Specialist 2 and successful completion of agency supervised training. OR An associate degree in fisheries technology or closely allied field and one year of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery. OR  Three years of education towards a bachelor’s degree in fisheries or closely allied field and one year experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery. LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS: A Valid Driver’s License is required. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Two or Four-year degree in Fisheries or closely related field.
