Position Focus:

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Public Education & Outreach at the Yale Peabody Museum, the Lead Educator (Youth Engagement) will guide the vision, development and implementation of teen programs that serve New Haven area high school students. The Lead Educator will design and manage all elements of daily programming for the EVOLUTIONS after school program, create a detailed multi-year curriculum foster relationships with program participants and support educational initiatives across YPM. 

Manage after school activities, including teaching daily EVOLUTIONS classes, supervising Yale student teachers, mentoring youth, and serving as primary contact for students and families.

With guidance from Assistant Director and Youth Programs Assistant Manager, envision and design year-long after school program curriculum for each high school grade level. This includes overseeing the development of science-focused, culturally responsive lesson plans, and organizing activities with guest speakers and other YPM staff.

Lead student recruitment process, maintain relationships with New Haven Public Schools teachers and community organizations, manage marketing and outreach efforts, and oversee onboarding of students.

Together with relevant grant PIs, carry out special projects and partnerships related to youth programs and public education, including field trips, events, summer internships and lab training, and activity development.

Ensure safety and well-being of all program participants, in alignment with Yale Youth Program policies and best practices for youth development. Complete other duties as assigned.

Position requires regular evening work (daily until 6:30pm), some weekends and holidays, and some overnight and multi-day trips with students.


Essential Duties

1. Fosters engaged learning experiences for university and public audiences by developing, delivering, and evaluating educational programs and events for classes, groups or individuals. 2. Develops strategies and resources for thematic tours, highlights tours, and special exhibition tours in coordination with exhibitions and collections on view. 3. Partners with schools, colleges, and educators to promote the use of the collections and museum activities in line with the national curriculum; facilitates activities in the local community in response to requests from schools or community groups. 4. Collects, analyzes, applies learnings from feedback on educational activities. 5. Coordinates docent and guide training programs, develops and communicates lesson plans, designs syllabi, implements and teaches training sessions. Evaluates new and returning docents and guides, vets tours for special exhibitions and assists in tour logistics. 6. Supervises bursary students, volunteers and interns as necessary. 7. Performs other duties as required. 8. Occasional evening and weekend work is required.


Required Education and Experience

Bachelor's Degree in a related field and three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Bachelor’s in science, education, psychology, urban studies, anthropology, communications, or related field, and two years of teaching experience in formal or informal settings. Experience with teen programs, internships, and/or museum education and working with or with lived experience as FGLI (first generation low income) or BIPOC (black indigenous or other people of color).
