Applied Behavioral Science


Position Overview

This position is responsible for the overall functioning of a classroom in the Edna A. Hill Child Development Center (CDC), which is part of the Applied Behavioral Science department in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The Lead Teacher ensures child health and safety to provide quality care to the children enrolled, completes all required classroom paperwork, ensures compliance with all KDHE and CDC policies and procedures, and manages overall cleaning and organization of the classroom. This position communicates regularly with parents, undergraduate students, graduate students, CDC Program Coordinator, and CDC Faculty Supervisors.


Job Description

30 % - Health and Safety/Policies and Procedures

Ensure child health and safety and provide quality care to all children enrolled in the classroom.
Follow KDHE and KU Edna A Hill Child Development Center (CDC) guidelines regarding handwashing, diapering, disinfecting, and dispensing medication.

40%  -Teacher Training and Supervision

Train and supervise staff in the classroom.
Observe, monitor, and provide feedback to staff regarding performance.
Ensure that staff are collecting adequate data on child behavior.
Ensure that staff are accurately implementing individualized child programs.
Mediate conflicts or concerns that arise among staff.
Facilitate feed forward sessions with staff each day.
Assist with the organization and supervision of orientation at the beginning of each semester.

20% - Policies and Procedures

Complete all required classroom paperwork.
Assist with preparing the classrooms and making program-related changes between semesters.
Ensure classroom compliance with all KDHE and CDC policies and procedures.
Maintain the cleanliness and appearance of the classroom by supervising cleaning and organization and communicating with the CDC Program Administrator and the CDC Faculty Supervisors regarding housekeeping and maintenance needs.
Obtain and maintain First Aid and CPR certification.
Assist Program Coordinator and CDC Faculty Supervisors with additional CDC tasks and coverage as needed.

10% - Meetings and Communication

Maintain classroom schedule and coordinate with other supervisors when substitutions are required.
Attend weekly supervisor meeting.
Provide feedback to and communicate with the CDC Program Administrator and the CDC Faculty Supervisors regarding overall program quality.
Communicate daily with parents regarding events at the CDC and at home.  Complete daily home reports and written communication regarding child progress.
Participate in and contribute to parent open house each semester. 


Required Qualifications

Evaluation of the following requirements will be made through (1) descriptions of work experience and educational experience in letter of application, (2) record of accomplishments and productivity addressed in resume, and (3) information provided from professional references:

  • High school diploma
  • Demonstrated ability to meet and maintain KDHE lead teacher qualifications
  • Six months teaching experience in a licensed childcare center or preschool OR six months of supervised practicum in licensed centers or preschools.
  • At least seven semester hours of academic study or equivalent training in child development, early childhood education, curriculum resources, nutrition, child guidance, parent education, supervised practicum, and/or administration of early childhood programs;
  • Excellent communication skills as evidenced by application materials;
  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with colleagues and professionals in the early childhood area.

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher by time of hire in early childhood education, human development, special education, applied behavioral science, applied behavior analysis, or related field;
  • Experience working with and knowledge of early childhood programs for typically developing children and children with intellectual and developmental disabilities ages 1 to 7;
  • Experience in assisting with training, evaluating, and supervising staff in an early childhood program;
  • Knowledge of behavioral principles;
  • Excellent communication skills.
