Lead Camp Coordinator, Facilities (Part Time) (Dewey, AZ)

The James 4-H Camp is seeking an enthusiastic and organized individual to fill the position of Lead Camp Coordinator, Facilities. The Lead Camp Coordinator provides operational leadership and stewardship for James 4-H Camp, ensuring the safe, reliable, and sustainable operation of camp facilities, infrastructure, equipment, and support systems. The position coordinates facility operations, maintenance activities, vendor services, site readiness, and administrative support functions that enable the successful delivery of Cooperative Extension and 4-H programs. Working independently within established policies and procedures, the employee serves as a key operational resource, supports emergency response activities, and fosters effective relationships with stakeholders, partners, and service providers.

Rooted in tradition and rich possibilities, the James 4-H Camp and Outdoor Learning Center is a beautiful 55-acre mountain camp surrounded by national forest where every camper thrives. The 4-H Program is grounded in university and research-based learning which allows youth to reach their full potential through experiential learning, leadership and life skill building. 4-H Camping is cooperative group living in a natural environment that focuses on hands-on learning and developing life skills by providing a framework for mentoring and role modeling. At camp youth learn how to take care of themselves and become more independent while enjoying a variety of classes and socializing with peers, teen leaders and adults from differing backgrounds.

4-H Camping Programs have the unique opportunity to reach a variety of audiences, bringing together those from limited income, underserved families as well as those with access to a variety of services; youth living in both urban and rural areas; and those who participate in other aspects of 4-H in a club or school enrichment activity.

This position requires the ability to work early mornings, evening, weekends, and holidays as needed, and has on-call responsibilities for emergencies.

Facilities Systems Stewardship, Preventive Maintenance, Repair, and Site Upkeep

• Develop and carry out preventive maintenance, inspection, testing, cleaning, winterization, troubleshooting, documentation, and renewal schedules for solar-electric and battery systems, inverters, generators, water supply and pumping systems, pressure and waste water components, buildings, furnishings, roofs, siding, drywall, roads, grounds, drainage, utilities, fire/life-safety components, vehicles, tractors, mowers, trailers, tools, and program equipment.
• Diagnose failures and perform authorized repairs and skilled maintenance using carpentry, framing, finish work, furniture repair, roofing, siding, drywall, painting, basic plumbing, basic electrical, mechanical, welding/metalwork, grounds keeping, and general construction skills; remove unsafe assets from service, and escalate specialized work.
• Maintains system histories, work records, warranties, manuals, shutoff maps, inspection records, utility data, parts lists, and continuity documentation; identifies recurring failures and recommends corrective or capital solutions.

Facilities Projects, Budgeting, Procurement, Inventory, and Contractor Coordination

• Develops project scopes, cost estimates, schedules, phasing plans, life cycle priorities, site preparation, implementation, quality checks, closeout documentation, and budget recommendations for maintenance, repair, capital renewal, accessibility, and sustainability work.
• Coordinates vendor and contractor access, site orientation, safety expectations, work sequencing, deliverable verification, and records while following University purchasing, contracting and payment requirements.
• Supports procurement, receiving, inventory control, reorder planning, keys, fuel, parts, supplies, safety equipment, materials, manuals, warranties, asset records, and surplus or disposal processes to ensure stewardship of University resources.

Camp Operations, Group Readiness, Training, and Leadership Continuity

• Coordinates and performs opening, readiness, turnover, and closing checks for buildings, utilities, roads, grounds, equipment, and water & waste systems before, during, and after rental groups and Extension programs.
• Provides utility orientations, demonstrations, and follow-up on utilities, facilities, appropriate equipment use, restricted areas, conservation practices, waste, fire prevention, emergency communication, and other camp procedures; responds to operational needs and documents issues and corrective actions.
• Serves as acting on-site operational lead or Camp Director designee when assigned, supporting group needs, resolving operational issues, maintaining continuity, and communicating within defined authority until relieved.

Workforce Coordination, Grants, Data, Evaluation, and Continuous Improvement

• Plans and directs assigned work for volunteers, AmeriCorps members, NCCC crews, temporary personnel, contractors, and community service teams; provides orientation, task instruction, safety briefings, work sequencing, hands-on coaching, quality checks, documentation, and feedback without exercising formal personnel authority unless separately delegated.
• Contributes technical information, cost estimates, photographs, asset and utility data, work-order records, output data, project results, and performance measures for budgets, grant planning and reporting, accreditation, evaluation, and stakeholder communication.
• Collects and analyzes facilities and operational data and recommends improvements to schedules, procedures, training, documentation, resource allocation, participant support, and program operations.

Emergency Preparedness, CERT Response, and Interagency Coordination

• Maintains expert working knowledge of the camp Emergency Operations Plan and SOPs and participates in planning, drills, emergency-equipment checks, hazard mitigation, incident documentation, after-action review, and corrective action.
• Fulfills an assigned leadership role within the camp CERT/emergency structure; provides immediate operational assessment of facility, utility, access, structural, and equipment conditions; supports evacuation, shelter, and responding agencies.
• Develops and maintains operational relationships with local fire and EMS systems, county entities, land-management agencies, the U.S. Forest Service, Arizona forestry partners, watershed organizations, environmental regulators, utilities, neighboring organizations, and community partners.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

• Knowledge of facility maintenance practices, construction methods, utility systems, equipment operation, and safe work procedures.
• Skill in diagnosing operational problems, evaluating solutions, and performing preventive maintenance and authorized repairs.
• Skill in planning, coordinating, and prioritizing projects and operational activities, including recordkeeping, inventory management, procurement, and vendor coordination.
• Ability to communicate effectively with various audiences, provide technical guidance and training, and build productive relationships with partners, contractors, and stakeholders.
• Ability to exercise sound judgment, work independently, manage competing priorities, and respond effectively to changing operational needs and emergency situations.
• Ability to use computer applications and technology to maintain records, track work activities, prepare reports, and support operational decision-making.

Physical Requirement:

• High school diploma or high school diploma equivalency is required.
• Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
• Must have a valid driver’s license and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy .

• Three or more years of progressively responsible experience in facilities operations, maintenance, construction, utilities, camp operations, or a closely related field.
• Experience operating, maintaining, or troubleshooting solar power systems, generators, water and wastewater systems, or other remote/off-grid infrastructure.
• Demonstrated hands-on experience in multiple skilled trades areas, such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical systems, welding, mechanics, or grounds equipment maintenance.
• Experience coordinating projects, vendors, contractors, procurement activities, inventories, budgets, or operational records.
• Experience leading, training, or directing the work of volunteers, temporary staff, contractors, or work crews.
