Job Summary/Basic Functions

The Office of University Counsel provides legal advice and counsel to the Board of Regents, the President, and all University units on matters affecting the University. This broad function includes but is not limited to the interpretation of federal and state laws, contract review, negotiating and drafting documents, handling internal and external administrative regulatory matters, policy review and development, responding to open records requests, managing all litigation involving the University or its personnel acting in the course and scope of employment, resolving claims by and against the University, and providing guidance and direction regarding dispute resolution.
Reporting to the Deputy Counsel, the Legal Fellow is exposed to various legal issues pertinent to the University. Areas of practice include constitutional law, employment, business operations and transactions, student matters, contract and affiliation agreements, and general litigation support. With supervision, the Legal Fellow will provide legal research, advise on various legal issues, draft contracts and other legal documents, review University policies, review discovery documents, and other litigation responses and appearances as appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Graduate of an accredited law school or plan to graduate within six (6) months of start date.

Experience: Experience as a law fellow or clerk with preference given to candidates who have previously worked at a higher education institution or otherwise demonstrate strong familiarity with higher education legal issues.

Licensure & Certifications: Admission to the Kentucky Bar Association or expected within twelve (12) months of start date.
