Job Description Summary

The University of Pennsylvania's English Language Programs (ELP) is hiring a Language Specialist to instruct in ELP programs, contribute to the development of course curricula, coordinate short programs, engage with students both formally and informally, participate in general planning for the ELP, and actively serving on committees and task forces as assigned. This is a Limited Service position that works 10 months each year.

Job Description

The University of Pennsylvania English Language programs (ELP) is a top English language program with a CEA-accredited Intensive Program. We offer open-enrollment programs in academic, professional, and general English and also provide programs to matriculated Penn students in areas such as business, design, and the sciences. We offer teacher training, cross-cultural training, and testing. Custom programs and consulting services are available for foundations, multinational corporations, universities, and government agencies.

The Language Specialists instruct English as a Second Language courses across diverse programs. They are open to becoming adept at the teaching of English for Business, Science, or enhanced intelligibility. Responsibilities include crafting lessons within curricular frameworks, creating curricula, aiding in orientation activities, coordinating programs as required, participating in departmental committees, serving as a course manager, and actively contributing to the field through publications or presentations at national conferences and local meetings.

Job Responsibilities

  • Teach English as a second language; prepare lessons within curricular guidelines; provide feedback to students regarding course objectives and general English proficiency

  • Special projects as assigned —program coordination, etc. 

  • Assist in curriculum upkeep, course management

  • Contribute to committee work, strategic planning, in-house professional development activities, etc.

  • Assist in orientation, testing, and placement activities

  • Orient, lead and mentor part-time lecturers

  • Contribute to planning and participate in out-of-class interaction with students (social and cultural activities, informal counseling, etc.)

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) or closely related field and 2 to 3 years of experience or equivelant combination of education and experience is required.

  • Minimum three years experience teaching in university-level ESL programs

  • Experience using technology for instructional and administrative purposes

  • Fluency in a foreign language and experience teaching abroad desirable

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and enthusiasm for working as part of a team.
