Description
TITLE: Landscaping Lead (Qualifying Party) FLSA Status: Non-exempt, Full Time or Part Time REPORTS TO: Urban Habitat Restoration Manager DATE REVIEWED: January 2022 SUMMARY: The Landscaping Lead’s primary function is to serve as the Qualifying Party allowing Tucson Audubon to secure and hold a Landscaping License (Arizona ROC: Category CR-21). The Landscaping Lead will provide expertise and capacity across a range of Tucson Audubon programs including in the implementation of GI-LID and GSI projects; residential/commercial/municipal habitat restoration and habitat creation projects; and the creation of artificial streams and water features as habitat amenities. These duties include adequately maintaining all licensing requirements and documentation on behalf of the organization. Tucson Audubon will reimburse testing fees associated with attaining the CR-21 qualifying party status and pay all business license application fees. Tucson Audubon can flexibly accommodate a range time availability in this position, from being a Full Time employee to being a very Part Time employee while meeting the requirements of being the Landscape License Qualifying Party. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: • Secure and maintain Organizational Contracting License in the CR-21 category including all required documentation and record keeping; • Work with Program and Project Managers to implement and ensure code compliance on all manner of GSI/GI-LID projects, habitat creation and enhancement at the residential, commercial, and municipal scales, and artificial streams and water features; • Work to train coworkers on legally required landscape best-practices; • Integrate all manner of sustainability measures into landscape project planning; • Be proficient with local and state codes and regulations especially as regards stormwater management, urban greening efforts, invasive species control, and federal regulations regarding threatened and endangered species, cultural, and environmental clearances. • Understand and be able to communicate native plant landscaping best practices. OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES • Primarily a field-based position, work in the office as need arises. Specific additional activities may include prescribed burning, mechanical and chemical weed control, vegetation establishment, bank stabilization, slope restoration, erosion control, rainwater harvesting, bird and vegetation monitoring/surveys and more; • Communicate program and project outcomes to the public, funders, membership, and staff; • Participate as needed in supplying information for or writing articles / blog / social media posts; • Fulfill additional responsibilities as needed or directed by Director of Conservation and Research or Executive Director • Supports other Tucson Audubon events as requested, and is required to support main Tucson Audubon functions (e.g. Gala, Tucson Bird & Wildlife Festival, Membership annual holiday event) as deemed appropriate by the Executive Director SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: None. WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. • This position operates both from the office space located at our University Blvd. location, as well as from other Tucson Audubon properties and field sites and will require travel to project; • Must be physically able to lift up to 50 lbs and walk 5 miles in rugged conditions including loose sand and rocky trails; • Must be physically able to conduct field work outdoors in all weather conditions including extreme summer heat and freezing winter conditions; arid days or rain, for at least 8 hours; • Employee is regularly required to walk, stand, kneel, occasionally climb ladders or lay on ground; use hands for manual tasks requiring strength and manipulating tools requiring dexterity; pull and push loads; • Regularly required to talk and hear co-workers in sometimes loud or open environments; • Position may require camping or working from remote locations for multiple days; • Employee is regularly required to sit; use hands on a keyboard, mouse, or other tool required to complete work.
Qualifications
Required • 4 years of documented landscaping experience and demonstrated ability to secure and hold Landscaping Contractors License for Tucson Audubon within 30 days of hire; • Entrepreneurial mindset; • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; • Experience with computer software Office and G-suite software; • Must be well organized, disciplined, and able to multi-task; • Strong social skills and a track record of working positively with people at all levels; • Understanding of and commitment to the organization’s mission, goals, and values; • An interest in birds, natural history, and wildlife conservation; • Flexible approach to work and work schedule; • Valid Driver’s License (ability to secure valid Arizona Driver’s License). Preferred • Experience serving as the Qualifying Party for Residential/Commercial Landscaping license in AZ; • Existing ability to serve as Qualifying Party for Residential/Commercial Landscaping license in AZ without additional training or testing; • Certification as Landscape Architect, Landscape Professional (ACLP/ AZ SLM), Arborist, Ecological Restoration Practitioner, Commercial Pesticide Applicator, or other certifications relevant to the field or willingness to attain certifications as needed; • Degree in related field (Ecology, Urban Planning, Ecosystem Restoration, Geography etc); • Experience managing multiple staff across multiple projects; budgeting and multi-level project management; • Experience operating vehicles towing a trailer, tractors, skid-loaders, and other equipment; • Experience conducting avian point counts, vegetation surveys of multiple types; • Proficiency with CAD / SketchupPro or other landscape design software; • Training in or experience with natural channel design techniques and both active and passive water harvesting; • Experience with plant propagation, seed collection, and planting; • Advanced mechanical skills; small engine repair, computer hardware, etc; • Experience operating and maintaining chain saws, brush cutters, herbicide spray equipment, mowers, and other power tools; • Experience managing invasive species and working with herbicides, preferably those species common to southwest arid landscapes; • Experience with and knowledge of the Sonoran Desert, Sky Islands, and other southeastern Arizona habitats; This job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities and details required for each duty listed above.
