JOB DESCRIPTION: The Land Steward/Caretaker/Naturalist is responsible for routine property and building maintenance and repair in coordination with the Sanctuary Director as well as natural history programming as experience and time permit. The Land Steward/Caretaker/Naturalist must live onsite at Lorrimer Sanctuary in “the cottage” and will be responsible for ensuring the facility is safe and secure both during business hours as well as on holidays and weekends. They take an active role in promoting New Jersey Audubon as a membership-based conservation organization. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: Caretaker/Stewardship • Maintain an on-site presence so that problems can be identified, repaired, and reported to the Sanctuary Director in a timely manner. • Help maintain the nature center building - painting, light construction, repair work, and general maintenance including winterizing, garbage removal, etc. • Keep the property’s grounds neat and safe in appearance, in alignment with the Lorrimer Sanctuary’s Forest Stewardship Plan including general grounds maintenance including but not limited to: mowing and trimming, snow shoveling, trail maintenance, invasive plant removal, debris removal, driveway maintenance (including snow plowing in winter and periodic grading), deer fence monitoring and repair, equipment maintenance, onsite presence for special events, assistance in on-site habitat restoration/improvement projects, monitoring onsite systems (heating, cooling, etc.), maintenance of property boundary signs, policing property for illegal use/activities. • Provide site security which includes being the ongoing and dependable presence in the residence and on the property and will be the point of contact for emergency personnel response to security issues. • Serve as an ambassador for New Jersey Audubon with neighbors, vendors, local officials, and others. • Obtain and maintain certification for First Aid, CPR, and other public safety certification appropriate for the activities at the site. • Obtain a satisfactory background check. • Participate in ongoing training as necessary. • Other duties as assigned. Naturalist • Conduct (and plan, as applicable) environmental education programs for general public, volunteer groups and family programs based on stewardship projects. • Work with Sanctuary Director to determine appropriate type and number of programs per season. • Satisfactorily complete Center-specific programmatic training.
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS: • Must be at least 21 years of age with 2 years of demonstrated stewardship/land and building maintenance experience. • High school diploma required; B.A. or B.S. in the sciences or education preferred. • Demonstrated knowledge of New Jersey’s natural and built environments. • Must be able to operate standard maintenance machinery including leaf blowers, ride-on mowers, tractor, etc.). • Ability to work in an outdoor setting and interact with a variety of people including center visitors, program participants, members and donors. • Proficient computer skills - Microsoft Office software preferred. • Excellent written and oral communication skills, and knowledge of environmental and conservation issues a plus. • Excellent organizational, time and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, shifting priorities and meet deadlines. • Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills with the ability to relate to and motivate a diverse range of people, exercise cultural competence and inclusion, and accept direction and constructive criticism. • Motivated self-starter with capacity to work productively in a team setting with the ability to demonstrate initiative and a positive attitude. • Strong professionalism and work ethic with the ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality. • Flexibility to adjust hours to meet deadlines and special needs of the sanctuary and the Organization. • Must have a reliable car and valid driver’s license and be able to operate a vehicle in NJ. • Must have the physical capacity to walk throughout the land and buildings of the sanctuary, able to move materials and to lift 50 lbs. and operate mechanical equipment as needed. • Must live onsite. In lieu of rental payments, a license agreement will require labor commensurate to value of rent. The Land Steward/Caretaker/Naturalist will be responsible for all utilities including but not limited to electric, propone, phone, internet and cable service. The cottage is a stand-alone three-bedroom house. Must live on site. Starting Date: Immediate Salary: None. 20 – 25 hours of work/week will be required in lieu of rent.
