Job Overview

The Laborer assists with the maintenance of roofs, grounds, sidewalks, pavement, patios, garages, equipment and landscaped areas as part of the services provided by the Facilities Management department to maintain university buildings and grounds. They are assigned to maintenance group and perform semi-skilled labor work in accordance with industry/trade practices in responsibilities that include but are not limited to:

  • Perform light grass mowing, removal of weeds and daily policing of the grounds, irrigating lawns and planted areas, reactivating flower beds and tree saucers, and other related work
  • Assist with preventive maintenance of storm drains throughout the campus and in response to emergencies
  • Use all standard tools, equipment, materials and supplies of the trade; and observe all safety rules, regulations and precautions in performing their duties
  • Perform other her duties as directed by the supervisor

Work Interactions and Work Mode Designation

Reporting to the Maintenance Manager, the Laborer is part of the maintenance team that receives training and experience vital to the maintenance of exterior and garage spaces on the campus; and as assigned by the immediate supervisor or director of Facilities Management, they may report to another manager or staff member.

The Laborer supports a direct service of the department to ensuring an attractive, comfortable, safe and clean environment in which the University community can live, learn and work. Employees are expected to behave in a professional manner, comply with policies and practices, be flexible with respect to scheduling and work as part of a team.

This position has been designated as On-Campus. Please note that work mode designations are regularly reviewed in order to meet the evolving needs of the University. Requirements and Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalency
  • 2 years of experience performing general grounds work
  • Valid driver's license from Maryland, District of Columbia, or Virginia and - post hire - the ability to conform to University Driving Policy.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds

Emergency Designation The Laborer is designated as an Emergency employee, with the requirement to be available and willing to work during emergency situations such as staffing shortages, inclement weather (including snow removal), and water damage clean up - whether the University is closed, opening late or closing early.
