Georgetown University is seeking a Laborer to join our team.

Position #: P19133

Full-time: 40 hours

Schedule: Sunday - Thursday, 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Pay: $17.53 per hour

Location: Main Campus, 3700 “O” Street, Washington, DC

Job Overview

Under direct supervision, the Laborer assists in the operation of the campus-wide - including Georgetown community at large, multi-material solid waste disposal, recycling, compost and paper shredding programs. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Drive driving unit vehicles to designated disposal stations, as assigned
  • Ensure that all disposal areas are clean, organized, fully functional with proper signage and operational
  • Support the department with any snow removal operations as needed
  • Lift and empty heavy containers up to 50 pounds,
  • Process materials and clean and disinfect assigned vehicles, collection areas, and collection containers (including indoor trash and recycling)
  • Ensure efficient and economic use of supplies and materials to conserve university resources
  • Draw and/or requisition supplies, parts, materials and tools needed - and use such items economically to avoid undue costs
  • Inform supervisor of supply and material needs to ensure that adequate inventory is maintained

Work Interactions

Reporting directly to the Solid Waste Disposal and Recycling Supervisor, the Laborer works alongside Heavy Vehicle Operators, Landscapers and other Laborers.

They suggest improvements in the work to improve unit operations; and provide their supervisor with advice and suggestions regarding work methods, procedures, parts, tools and related matters for the purpose of improving the effectiveness and cost of service.

The Laborer works primarily with employees in the Landscaping and Waste Management unit within Planning and Facilities Management. However, as work is being performed, they may interact with students, faculty, staff and visitors as they traverse the campus. 

Very importantly, they work cooperatively with fellow employees to assure work is completed on time and according to specified plans.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Completion of the tenth grade of High School             
  • Department of Transportation Health Certificate
  • 2 years of experience performing general labor or manual work – preference for experience directly related to recycling and solid waste management
  • A valid driver’s license from Maryland, District of Columbia or Virginia

The Laborer operates University commercial vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26K pounds maximum – for example, tow trucks, box trucks, trash trucks, buses, and lifts. As such, the Laborer must possess a medical card and/or certificate issued by the Department of Transportation (DOT), which is issued by a licensed “medical examiner,” after completion of a DOT physical examination as defined in  GU Policy 1017 and DOT Regulations 391.11 (4) – Medical Card/Certificate and 390.5 (1) – Commercial Motor Vehicles (10K+) Definitions (http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov ).
