Position Overview

Highly qualified mechanical and hydraulic technician, who can operate a variety of academic teaching and research laboratories. Will interact directly with faculty members; therefore must be able to interact well with all types of personalities and diverse population. Must be able to establish priorities for projects in addition to operating laboratories.

Job Description

40% Interact with faculty, train and supervise students on a daily basis in support of instructional laboratories, custom research applications, laboratory demonstrations, and student competition projects. Coordinate and schedule project requests for departmental faculty and research staff, as well as academic assistants. Supervision entails establishing project priorities and assigning work according to skill and abilities.

20% Develop and manage testing, instrumentation, and data acquisition systems for teaching and research laboratories. Work with faculty to order, set-up, operate, maintain or arrange for service of all systems. Provide technical training and assistance to faculty and student personnel in periodic and regular scheduled maintenance, as well as repair and calibration of electronic instruments. Design, fabricate and modify test fixtures for equipment utilizing hydraulic, electrical, pneumatic, and mechanical equipment, mills, lathes, band saws, arc welding, plasma cutters, forklifts, and cranes. Install hydraulic hoses on MTS equipment, cut and thread pipe for various equipment using JIC, iron, and stainless fittings.

10% Prepare specifications and orders for equipment and materials that have to be purchased through the bid process. Effectively monitor, plan and utilize allocated supplies and equipment funds. Oversee and arrange shipping, moving, installation, repair, calibration, and preventive maintenance of all laboratory equipment and instruments. Ordering is done mostly through KU online purchasing system. Large materials are unloaded and moved with forklifts or cranes.

10% Responsible for safety procedures and training. Familiar with KU Environment, Health and Safety procedures for hazardous materials, laboratory rules, and requirements.

10% Maintain and reconcile departmental space allocation and use inventory. Maintain and reconcile, in cooperation with departmental accounting office, physical inventory, including equipment and property.

10% Other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications

  •  High School diploma/GED and three (3) years of related experience, or Bachelor's and one (1) year related experience.
  • Good written communication skills as evidenced by application materials.

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • At least one year of experience in welding and metal fabrication.
  • At least one year of experience with pipe fittings for air and water applications.
  • At least one year of experience in general carpentry, preventive maintenance and repairs.
  • Basic knowledge in management of hazardous waste.
  • General computer skills.
