The Laboratory Technician will oversee and coordinate operations of the DNA Technologies Laboratory along with the Director of the laboratory and assist with the Research Molecular Genetics Laboratory as required. Salary Range: $13.01/hr. - $16.72/hr. (commensurate to selected hire's experience)

Required Education and Experience:

  • Associate degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • One year of related lab work experience as an employee or student

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • The person in this position must be able and willing to be in charge of ordering supplies, running and maintaining laboratory equipment, isolation of DNA for analysis, assisting students with laboratory related projects, performing PCR for genotyping and sorting and shipping genetic samples for analysis

  • Must have the ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • B.S. degree in relevant field

  • More than one year of related lab work experience as an employee or student

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • General computer skills and a background in biology at the undergraduate level

Responsibilities:

  • Service Laboratory Responsibilities - Serve as a backup to the duties performed by students in the laboratory.  Perform DNA isolation, purification and quantification and perform / oversee other molecular biology techniques such as nuclear marker testing from bovids following sufficient training and instruction. Receive and ship genetics samples and write reports.

  • Equipment Operator and Customer Support - Operation of an Applied Biosystems (ABI) model 3730 DNA genotyper, perform and troubleshoot DNA genotyping reactions and provide customers access to data / reports.

  • General Laboratory Operation - Oversee invoicing, inventory, purchasing, website and freezer programs for the DNA Technologies Core and the Molecular Genetics research laboratory.

  • Monthly Reports - Provide the lab director a monthly report of DNA core laboratory activities (due the first week of each month). Perform other duties as assigned.
