JOB SUMMARY:
The Department of Agricultural and Life Sciences welcomes applications for 12-month full time salaried position for a Laboratory Technician II to provide support to the department faculty.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILTIES:
  • Operates and maintain basic laboratory equipment such as centrigues, pH meters, analytical balances, incubator, spectrophotometer, light microscopes, and biosafety cabinets.
  • Support faculty with the coordination and preparation of lab courses.
  • Set up basic laboratory equipment and solutions for classroom use. This includes moving equipment to the required classroom, set up and calibration, as well as stock reagents and solution preparation.
  • Provide laboratory housekeeping such as glassware cleaning, sample preservation and preparation, reagent water availability, schedule sterilizer and fume hood maintenance, and inspection of eyewash and safety shower stations.
  • Operate and maintain (calibration, alignment) of shared departmental equipment such as autoclaves, HPLC. GC-MS, TGA, benchtop NMR, XRF, and AA.
  • Obtain quotes from vendors, submit requisitions, and approve invoices for supplies needed for teaching us labs. Track budgets.
  • Manage service contracts with different vendors. Coordinate chemical and biological waste disposal with different vendors.
  • Troubleshoot and repair departmental computer hardware and software, and interface with Information Technology as needed.
  • Monitor and schedule usage of computer labs in the department.
  • Maintain data records of equipment use, and comply with chemical and biohazard safety standards through the proper handling, notification and disposal of broken glass and potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents.
  • Maintain chemical inventory database and safety data sheets (SDSs) for handling and disposal of potentially hazardous chemical and biological materials.
  • Carry out studies and responsibilities with limited supervision. Makes decisions and established work priorities on essential procedure oriented operations.
  • Other related duties may be assigned as needed by the Department Chair.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of biological and chemical hygiene, including safety and precautions for handling hazardous materials.
  • Knowledge of hazardous waste management.
  • Ability to prepare solutions, reagents, and stains following standard laboratory formulas and procedures in conjunction with equipment use and maintenance.
  • Ability to manage vendor accounts.
  • Comply and promote a culture of safety within the department and throughout campus.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
Minimum Qualifications
  • B.S. or commensurate laboratory and equipment experience, with 1-3 years prior experience in operating and maintaining advanced instrumentation such as benchtop NMR, GC-MS, TGA, HPLC, XRF, and AA.
  • M.S. in chemistry preferred.
