Laboratory Technician

General Description of the Position

The Photonic Sensors Systems Laboratory and the Makerspace Laboratory at Delaware State University seek a qualified candidate for the part-time or full-time laboratory technician position. The position involves basic and advanced management, maintenance, and operation of laboratory equipment, which includes optical and photonics instruments, printed circuit board (PCB) printers, 3D printers, etc. Candidates with an associate degree or bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electrical, or computer engineering and experience in electronics, hardware-software interfacing, and programming are encouraged to apply. Appointments will be for one year, with the possibility of renewal pending funding and satisfactory performance.


Essential Functions & Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Essential Functions

  • Conduct and manage Photonics Laser research laboratory operations and maintenance of key equipment, including lasers, wave meters, PCBs, and 3D printers. 
  • Perform electronic circuit design and circuit prototyping using Eagle CAD and mechanical design using Mechanical CAD.
  • Maintenance and operation of monarchical design instruments like 3D printers, Design and development of electronics and optomechanical components, software/hardware interfacing with knowledge of programming/simulation skills on at least a few platforms, including LABVIEW, MATLAB, CAD, Python, AutoCAD/Autodesk Inventor, EAGLE CAD, etc. 
  • Maintained laboratory inventory, worked with vendors, and placed orders when needed.
  • Conduct workshops for undergraduate students.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of electronic and mechanical design software, such as CAD, Python, MATLAB, LabVIEW, and Eagle CAD. 
  • Basic electronic prototyping skills like soldering and circuit testing.
  • Knowledge of microcontroller programming is highly preferred but not required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Ability to work and mentor undergraduate students


Qualification Standards

 Associates or bachelor’s degree in engineering or related fields.
