JOB SUMMARY

Under the limited supervision of the Director for the School of Nursing’s Bio-Behavioral Laboratory (BBL), the Lab Tech 2 is responsible for supporting and assisting faculty and students/trainees using the BBL, and providing laboratory assistance in support of the research activities of School of Nursing. Incumbents in this position are expected to know and apply the fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures in a research laboratory and are expected to act on their own initiative to trouble shoot and resolve a normal range of problems.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for maintaining organization and documentation in sample storage refrigerators and freezers.
  • Maintain complete documentation of all laboratory procedures according to established requirements.
  • Prepare samples for analysis or testing according to standard procedures.
  • Select appropriate methods and techniques from among the standard possibilities; test such methods to ensure accuracy and consistency; make modifications of ordinary difficulty to ensure standardized results, in consultation with supervisor.
  • Assist BBL users develop and validate protocols.
  • Operate, test, and calibrate analytical instruments, equipment, and related components; make adjustments and resolve problems of ordinary difficulty.
  • Maintain BBL equipment, instruments, and related apparatus, which may be highly specialized; troubleshoot and resolve problems of ordinary difficulty.
  • Maintain necessary records, proper laboratory conditions and safety procedures; maintain an adequate inventory of laboratory supplies, within prescribed limits.
  • Assist faculty, students, and others with technical problems related to laboratory techniques or equipment.
  • Maintain safe working conditions and a clean, orderly work area at all times.
  • Assist BBL billing and invoice process and management.
  • Travel to UConn Health for lab management and maintenance.
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, nursing, or related field
  • Three years of experience working in a laboratory setting
  • Demonstrated ability to apply fundamental concepts, techniques, and practices found in a research laboratory
  • Ability to produce reliable results, problem-solve, and troubleshoot problems of moderate difficulty
  • Ability to maintain laboratory equipment and resolve problems of ordinary difficulty
  • Knowledge of computers and programs used for data and sample analysis
  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in biology, nursing, or related field;
  • Experience with the following technologies:
    • Sterile techniques;
    • Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA);
    • DNA extraction;
    • Quantitative Polymerase chain reaction (qPCR);
    • Library preparation for illumina sequencing;
    • Cell culture;
    • Bacterial culture;
  • Proficiency in record keeping;
  • Proficiency in excel;
  • Strong verbal communication skills and attention to detail in following experimental protocols.
  • APPOINTMENT TERMS

    This is a full-time, end-dated position, subject to annual renewal.  This position is specifically for the time period beginning October 1, 2021 through September 30, 2022.  Salary will be commensurate with the successful candidates’ background and experience. Work location is at the Storrs campus.
