Oversee the day-to-day operation of the Framingham Heart Study laboratory, including phlebotomy and testing of samples collected from study participants. Supervise the FHS laboratory QC program, maintenance of laboratory instrumentation and purchasing. Execute training programs for laboratory staff.

Essential Function #1-40%


Supervise daily operation of the FHS laboratory including specimen collection, processing, storage and testing. Manage staff scheduling and work flow. Critically review analytical testing runs and release participant laboratory results. Monitor communication of alert and urgent values to participant physicians. Assist with difficult phlebotomies. Working with the staff in the FHS Research Center, assure the comfort and safety of study participants. Provide staff training as necessary. Following guidelines from the BU Office Environmental Health and Safety, ensure that the FHS is in compliance with all safety regulations.


Essential Function #2- 20%


Supervise laboratory QC program. Calculate and monitor weekly and monthly statistics and prepare internal reports. Perform required biannual calibration verifications. Supervise testing and reporting for an external proficiency testing program. Work with the lab manager to monitor accuracy and precision of all in-house testing. Organize control material inventory, maintaining sufficient volume and tracking lot numbers and expiration dates.

Essential Function #3-5%

Provide 24 hour supervision for the FHS biorepository. Carry an on-call pager at all times. Respond to and troubleshoot freezer, power and air conditioning failures when paged during non-business hours.

Essential Function #4--20%

Maintain sophisticated instrumentation. Oversee performance of daily and monthly maintenance. Adhere to maintenance schedules, including routine calibrations, repairs and replacement of equipment parts. Work with field service representatives and remote manufacturer support to assure that instruments are maintained in peak working condition.

Essential Function #5-15%

Track usage and purchasing of all materials used by the FHS laboratory. Work with FHS/BU procurement staff to identify best vendors and prices for goods and services.


Bachelor's degree with 5-8 years of experience required.
