The Beirne B. Carter Immunology Research Center is currently seeking a Laboratory Specialist Intermediate to join the laboratory of Justin J. Taylor, PhDDr. Taylor’s lab is focused on unlocking the potential of B cells to protect against infection, cancer, and other diseases where these cells could benefit human health. For more information, please visit: https://www.immunology.virginia.edu/taylor-lab  


  


This position provides technical support to a basic science research laboratory that will consist of graduate and undergraduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and technical staff. The lab specialist will work closely with the PI and other lab members to learn and expertly perform a variety of experimental procedures including but not limited to tissue harvesting and preparation, molecular biology, protein production, genetic engineering, flow cytometry, and/or single cell sequencing.  


  


Attention to detail, highly detailed record keeping, strong communication skills, and intellectual engagement are required to exceed in this position. Those seeking to learn and grow will be best suited for this position as the Taylor lab seeks to ensure the success of the short and long term goals of both the individual and the lab. The individual should be self-guided and creative in seeking possible solutions to experimental/technical challenges at hand. Initial work for this position will not be focused upon a single project, but individuals exhibiting the desire and ability to lead an independent project may be given that opportunity.   


  


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS 


Education: Bachelor's degree. 


Experience: 6 years of experience in a lab technician or research related role. May substitute with Master's or Terminal degree plus 4 years of experience in a lab technician or research related role. 9 years of lab-or research related experience accepted in lieu of degree. 


  


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 


  • Experienced applicants for more advanced positions should have experience in the following areas: general biological procedures immunology or genetic engineering research experience. 

  • Expertise in protocol and SOP development, ACUC, IRB, EH&S and other local, federal, or sponsor-driven regulations and policies is desirable. 

  • An ability to work both independently and with others in a highly collaborative team-based environment. 

  • Strong attention to detail and communication skills; general computer skills.  


  


PHYSICAL DEMANDS 


This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
