Laboratory Safety Specialist

Description

The Laboratory Safety Specialist supports the safety, industrial hygiene and environmental management programs in campus laboratories, makerspaces, and academic shops.  Key activities include inspections, technical consultations, evaluating and advising on hazard mitigation strategies (e.g. safety equipment, laboratory safety procedures, personal protective equipment, etc.), conducting laboratory commissioning/decommissioning, assisting with hazardous materials management, and supporting the overall mission of UTK Environmental Health and Safety.

 



Qualifications

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:   B.S. degree in one of the following fields of study:  chemistry, biology, environmental science, environmental health, environmental engineering, hazardous materials management, safety management, environmental management, industrial hygiene, toxicology or related field.

 

Experience:   4 years of laboratory (fields as indicated above) or safety-related experience. Knowledge of laboratory safety and environmental regulations is highly desired. 

The following are preferred and may substituted, individually or in combination, for a maximum of 2 years of experience as indicated above:

Graduate degree in a field of study described above

ASP, CSP, OHST, CHMM, or similar safety-based certification 

 

Job Skills: Qualified candidates must have familiarity with laboratories and/or shops; be able to work collaboratively/cooperatively with a diverse team and customer base; demonstrate strong verbal/written communication skills; have strong organizational skills; be able to work with computers and customary software (e.g. Microsoft Office, Adobe, etc.), and an ability to work independently with minimal supervision. 

Preference will be given to those individuals who have laboratory or EHS experience at a college/university and/or hold a professional certification related to safety or environmental compliance.

 

Additional Requirements: U.S. citizen; valid driver’s license; ability to wear personal protective equipment, including respirators.
