Job Description

Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering, Dean’s Office Infrastructure and Safety Team is seeking a motivated, self-directed Laboratory Safety Inspector.  Reporting to the Assistant Director of Safety, the position will: Coordinate chemical, biological, electrical, and physical safety programs for the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering (FSE); Participate in safety oversight in instructional and research laboratories and chemical storage areas; Act as a department informational resource on chemical safety; Complete: chemical inventories, cataloging, sorting, waste disposal, workplace modification, repairs, safety emergency evaluation & initial timely response; and do other duties related to safety. This is a specialized classification and not part of a series.  Possible exposure to hazardous and/or toxic chemicals, in the course of work, requires a knowledgeable person for Hazards identification and Emergency response.

Essential Duties

• Performs safety inspections to identify potential safety and health hazards.  Schedules and conducts inspections. Generates corrective action reports with identified hazard mitigation priorities.  Reviews inspection reports, action items with owners assigned, and recommendations with supervisor and other appropriate staff/faculty.  
• Inspects Engineering Laboratories (instructional and research) and chemical storage areas as necessary; Helps correct violations of university chemical hygiene plan/policies; local, state, or federal safety regulations; identifies, recommends, and takes action to correct violations. Helps analyze and characterize unknown hazardous waste.  Coordinates hazardous waste management and disposal with hazardous materials management staff.
• Consults as necessary with laboratory managers and employees regarding recognized and potential occupational health and safety hazards.  Provides reviews for: chemical processes, equipment safety, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Engineering Controls, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and chemical pre-review approvals, for safe research activities.  Checks chemical equipment and operating conditions, and repairs or reports malfunctions.
• Supports Emergency Response Programs related to all safety oversight within FSE.   Assists with Emergency Response and Backup coverage for After Hours/Weekends (24hours /7days a week).
• Maintains and identifies opportunities for improvements in FSE Department Laboratory Safety Inspections and ASU Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Safety Programs (Lab Safety Inspections, Lab Registration program, etc.).  Analyzes and identifies safety policies, systems, or procedures; Recommends appropriate changes to management.  Provides input to EHS laboratory safety policies and procedures for compliance with all applicable regulations.  Helps update applicable EHS and Department procedures.
• Develops and implements health and safety educational programs or activities to improve awareness of health and safety procedures; includes laboratory safety training programs, and on-line formats of training.
• Maintains current knowledge of new and existing laboratory safety regulations.  Interprets and evaluates university compliance with applicable safety codes.
• Counsels and informs staff, faculty and students on chemical safety techniques, packaging, and labeling practices (may include written bulletin, lab signage, newsletter, or presentation).
• Investigates safety related incidents and recommends necessary corrective action.  Uses formal Incident Reporting and follow up processes.
• Works with appropriate Safety and Research Teams to clean up chemical spills using proper chemical safety techniques; reports to supervisor and appropriate staff/faculty or departments.
• Helps assess work and learning environments, with ASU EHS Team and Employees, to identify, quantify, and mitigate employee exposures to occupational hazards.
• Assists with on-line laboratory safety registration and laboratory safety plans; Supports on-line record keeping. 
• Supports the ASU EHS Compliance Officer Program and participates on Safety Committees.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in industrial hygiene, public health, chemistry, or closely related scientific field AND four years experience in safety, fire prevention, environmental health, industrial hygiene or related field; OR, Eight years experience in safety, fire prevention, environmental health, industrial hygiene or related field, which includes one year in a supervisory capacity; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

• Experience in academic research labs.
• Experience in focusing on the consultative role rather than enforcing compliance.
• Demonstrated knowledge of the needs of students, researchers, and principal investigators, while maintaining the highest safety standards.
• Experience in producing results while working autonomously, with little oversight
• Experience with teaching adults.
• Experience in material science, Nano-Fabrication, and biomaterials. 
• Experience developing process and safety protocols.

Working Environment

• Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office or laboratory setting, subject to extended periods of sitting or standing.
• Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
•  Walking campus between buildings is required.  Travel to supported FSE Lab sites off Tempe campus is required.
• Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.
• Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
• Clearly communicate to perform essential functions
• Occasional travel, involving operation of a motor vehicle.
• Wear PAPR or N95 respirators, clean room bunny suits, and personal protective equipment for Biological research and spill response.
• Regular use of standard office equipment including, but not limited to: computer workstation/laptop (keyboard, monitor, mouse), printer, fax, calculator, copier, telephone and associated computer/technology peripherals.
• Use personal protection equipment, including respirators 
• This position also receives managerial review of objectives.
