JOB SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Chair of the Department of Chemistry and the Coordinator of Environmental Health and Safety, the LSWMO shall provide both professional and technical services on behalf of the department and University. 

Title Position Reports To: Chair of the Chemistry Department and the Director for Environmental Health and Safety

SALARY INFORMATION:

In compliance with New York’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $48,000 - $53,000. Adelphi University considers factors such as departmental budgets, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. An annual base salary higher than the range may be warranted in circumstances where a candidate has demonstrable equivalent prior higher education experience at another University.

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

Chemical Stockroom Technician

1. Serve as the Department of Chemistry chemical stockroom technician and, as such, is responsible for assisting with the receipt, inspection, inventory and delivery of all chemicals in the department. 

2. Supervise stockroom in the absence of chemistry stockroom manager, including occasional evenings.

Laboratory Safety

1. Assist with continuous interactions with laboratory supervisors to evaluate conditions within their work area and, from this, assist with developing laboratory specific Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) adequate to protect laboratory occupants from potential chemical hazards.

2. Assist with laboratory inspections, providing training, maintaining safety data sheets (SDS) and chemical inventories, inspecting safety devices, and ensuring compliance with applicable federal, state, and local authorities.

Hazardous Waste Management

1. Manage the University hazardous chemical waste program, including receipt, classification, storage, and disposal, in compliance with all applicable regulations.

2. Managing "cradle to grave" of all chemicals used at the university. 

3. Maintain knowledge of applicable federal waste regulations (40 CFR Parts 260-281) promulgated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and applicable state regulations promulgated by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) as they pertain to storage, handling, transport, and disposal of hazardous materials and ensure the same.

4. Assist with ensuring all Resource Conservation Recovery Act (RCRA) standards are continuously met, maintaining all hazardous chemical waste program related documentation and record-keeping including inventories, hazardous waste manifests, inspection reports, etc.

5. Maintain knowledge of applicable federal hazardous materials transportation regulations (49 CFR Parts 171-179) as promulgated by the Department of Transportation (DOT) and ensure compliance with hazardous material related OSHA Standard 29 CFR 1910.120 and 29 CFR 1926.65 and 29 CFR 1910.1450.

6. Assist with Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Chemicals of Interest List reporting compliance.

7. Assists with maintaining all Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for chemicals used in the Biology and Chemistry Departments.

8. Respond to emergencies related to accidental release of chemicals.

9. Serve as a standing member of the executive safety committee.

Training

  • Assist with developing, gaining authorization for, managing, and conducting laboratory safety, chemical hygiene, and hazardous waste management training for all University faculty, students, and staff. This shall include assisting with notifying incoming personnel of the training requirements, tracking attendance, and ensuring overall training compliance.
  • Conduct training for all Teaching Assistants, Research Assistants, and Faculty (full-time and adjunct) on an annual basis.
  • REQUIREMENTS:

  • Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Google software and email. 
  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to lift 40 lbs.  Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) required to fulfill the position essential functions (including medical clearance to wear a respirator).
  • EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Baccalaureate degree in chemistry required.  
  • Demonstrable expertise in laboratory safety measures is required.
  • Experience as a practicing Laboratory Safety Officer, carrying a full portfolio of the breadth and depth described herein is preferred.
  • Certified in Chemical Hazardous Material Management (CHMM) or will become certified within six (6) months of initial employment required.
  • DOT/RCRA trained (U.S. Department of Transportation/Resource Conservation and Recovery Act) or will become trained within six (6) months of initial employment required.
