The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) is currently seeking a full-time, contractual Cancer Biology Laboratory Research Technician for the Department of Pharmacology. Under direct supervision, the selected candidate will work on NIH and DOD funded projects related to breast cancer metastasis. The goal of the laboratory is to gain a deeper understanding of molecular mechanisms underlying breast cancer metastasis in specific organs. The lab engages in cutting edge Cancer Cell Biology approaches including single cell analysis, epigenetic profiling, circulating tumor cell biology, in vivo metastatic modeling, flow cytometry, tumor sphere and organoid culture, and immunofluorescence on mouse and human tumor tissue specimens.

PRIMARY DUTIES:
-Under Supervisor guidance perform day-to-day laboratory operations to include, checking quality control and safety compliance, and ordering supplies.
-Maintain proper operation of research equipment.
-Collecting, recording, and entering research data
-Ordering of required components and assist with resolving technical issues.
-Perform day to day laboratory research activities as assigned by Supervisor such as: generation of lab reagents and cell lines; general housekeeping, animal surgeries and injections; daily observations of animal health; collection of cultures and biological specimens for diagnostic testing and monitoring of animal health; bacteriological, or biological assays; breeding colonization processes; electrophoresis, blotting, chromatography, PCR and DNA extractions; histopathological processing and immunofluorescence of human and mouse tissues etc.
-May be assigned independent project(s) and participate in the design of research studies.
-Assist in compiling and analyzing research data using various relevant computer software applications.
-Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree in a biological or chemical science.
OTHER: Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
General knowledge of the principles and practices of natural and/or chemical sciences; of the safe and proper handling and disposal of applicable specimens, materials and equipment. Ability to perform laboratory procedures using applicable equipment and techniques; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to use computers and related software applications; to lift, transport and deliver materials and stock laboratory supplies and goods; to wear and work in personal protective equipment.

Based on the duties of this position, selected candidates are not eligible to participate in the Bargaining Unit (Union).

 

Salary Range: $44,489 - $46,000 per year (Commensurate with education and experience)
