Laboratory Research Assistant

HEMATOLOGY/ONCOLOGY (IN-HEMO-IUINA)

Department-Specific Responsibilities

• Participates in projects focused on investigating novel approaches for the treatment of breast cancer. Our laboratory employs a wide array of techniques to study signaling pathways responsible for propagation, resistance and metastasis of breast cancer. 
• Performs various tasks including engineering targeting constructs, gene knockdown, genotyping by PCR and Southern blot analysis, studying gene expression and protein synthesis by qRT-PCR, western blot, and flow cytometry. 
• Utilizes immunoprecipitation, protein purification, ELISA and fluorescence microscopy as well as electrophysiology and live imaging to study the biology of breast and other cancers. 

General Responsibilities

• Responsible for the initiation, monitoring, completion, and reporting of routine to moderately complex research studies.
• Organizes and implements data review and analysis.
• Oversees the proper handling of laboratory specimens including processes, shipping, storage, and documentation and transfer to designated central laboratories.
• Conducts data quality assurance practices.
• Prepares research summaries and assists in progress report development.
• Maintains laboratory work areas and supply inventory.

EDUCATION

Required

• Bachelor's degree in science or health-related discipline. 

Preferred

• Master's degree in biological or medical sciences. 

SKILLS

• Experience in culture of human cells, transfections, and basic molecular biology techniques (mRNA and DNA isolation, RT-PCR, molecular cloning).

The role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts.
