Job Description


The Vargas-Muñiz Lab in the Department of Biological Sciences at Virginia Tech seeks a full-time laboratory Manager. The laboratory Manager will support existing projects related to the human pathogen Aspergillus fumigatus and the marine yeast Hortaea werneckii. This full-time laboratory manager is responsible for the following: (i) assisting with the day-to-day operation of the lab; (ii) preparing media and solutions; (iii) ordering research supplies; (iv) generation and maintenance of fungal strain; (v) maintenance of mammalian cell line (vi) assists with grant and manuscript writing, and (vii) collaborating with an interdisciplinary research team.

Candidates should submit a cover letter addressing how they meet the required and preferred qualifications described below, a resume/CV detailing relevant work experience, and a list of three references with their contact information. This position is for at least one year, contingent upon satisfactory annual reviews. The position will remain open until filled.


Required Qualifications

• MS degree in biology, molecular biology, microbiology, or a related field.
• Must have excellent teamwork and collaborative skills to work effectively within a distributed team
• Experience with the preparation of solutions and media
• Experience with fungal genetics tool, including CRISPR/Cas9 and/or fungal transformation
• Enthusiasm and curiosity for science
• Excellent and demonstrated organizational and efficient time management skills
• Excellent communication skills, including verbal, written, and graphical communication skills
• Previous laboratory management experience


Preferred Qualifications

• Previous background or interest in fungal biology
• Experience working in a highly interdisciplinary collaborative team
• Experience doing molecular biology work.
