Laboratory Manager

Job Summary:

The person in this position will work as part of an integrated Meat Science & Animal Biologics Discovery (MSABD) Extension and research program in the state-of-the-art MSABD building to lead a dynamic stakeholder focused research program to address food safety, quality, and other identified science-based needs of Wisconsin and national meat industries having science-based practical impact and value.
The person in this position will work collaboratively with team members (i.e. faculty supervisor, staff, students) and compliment the efforts of an existing nationally recognized Meat Science & Animal Biologics Discovery Extension program to identify internal and external opportunities for aligning with and leveraging knowledge and other resources on and off campus to address current and future meat science and food safety issues and science-based needs.
The person in this position will need to identify research ideas and needs inward (from within UW) and outward (from the meat industry) and support research efforts (including grant writing and management, oversight and support of research assistants and other researchers, and communication of results via industry reports, peer-reviewed manuscripts, and professional meeting & industry presentations).
A deep understanding about microbiology (including hands on lab skills), organization, communication, and budgetary skills are important.
This position will work closely and collaboratively with the faculty supervisor to build a nationally recognized research program rooted in basic science principles, leveraging stakeholder networks (as appropriate) to deliver applied research results that can be effectively implemented to foster the viability and growth of the Wisconsin and National Meat Industries. Interaction and involvement with the Wisconsin and U.S. meat industries to promote and support the Wisconsin Idea will be expected and valuable.

Responsibilities:
Directs the technical activities, operations, planning, and policy development of a lab, including coordinating the activities of multiple, complex projects and staff to ensure quality control and compliance with regulations.

• 5% Identifies, proposes, and implements new or revised unit operational policies and procedures in alignment with strategic initiatives and objectives
• 10% Serves as the unit liaison to internal and external stakeholder groups providing information, making recommendations to leadership, and representing the interests of the unit
• 50% Directs and supervises the day-to-day laboratory operations, quality control programs, and/or staff of a work unit to ensure compliance with organization and regulatory agency standards
• 10% May exercise supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 FTE or equivalent employees
• 5% Develops and facilitates trainings regarding scientific experimentation, technical procedures, and equipment operations to various audiences
• 10% Write and assist with writing grant proposals, interim, and final reports (including technical industry reports and peer-reviewed manuscripts)
• 10% Disseminating research outcomes and results at Extension programs and scientific conferences.

Education:

Preferred
Master's Degree
Preferred focus in animal science, meat science or chemistry

Qualifications:

Required:
-Experience independently managing a high volume of varied tasks (e.g.; organizing; prioritizing and performing record keeping. Please describe strategies/tools used.
-Experience in Lab and Grant administration including ordering, budgeting for proposals, and managing grant funds.
-Experience with animal/food and food safety research, microbiology and microbiological techniques, and meat quality/chemistry research.
Preferred:
-Experience in managing animal care protocols, biosafety protocols and chemical hygiene protocols.
-Experience managing a research program or laboratory.

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Minimum $70,000 ANNUAL (12 months)

Additional Information:

This position will be scheduled to work 40 hours per week with the intended schedule of Monday through Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm. Hours will be flexible in order to ensure operational needs are met, and some weekend work may be required.
