Description

The Department of Surgery is seeking to hire a full time Laboratory Manager for the Surgical Science Lab (SSL). the Laboratory Manager will report to the SSL Director and be supervised by the Basic Science Lab & Safety Manager within the Department of Surgery. In this role you will oversee all operations of the SSL, with primary responsibility for the surgical training programs, and their accredited surgical service lines. You will work collaboratively to envision, plan and implement new education and training program development efforts both within UCLA and for courses offered to the community, nationally and internationally. You will arrange and supervise all CME and MOC programs; and work to expand the Surgical Education Technology Industry Affiliates program in collaboration with the Center for Advanced Surgical and Interventional Technology (CASIT) with a focus on training of emerging surgical and interventional technologies. The SSL Manager will work with the American College of Surgeons and The American Board of Surgery to support and expand our accredited AEI, and Surgical Science Laboratory. SSL will train and certify practicing surgeons in emerging surgical technologies and conduct research in learning and training of surgeons and interventionists with an emphasis on use of cadavers in training. You will be responsible for the education budget of the lab, direct purchasing and maintenance of the equipment, coordinate operational technical support functions, and interfacing with support organizations. The candidate will also help provide direct instruction in key surgical assist technologies and proctoring of minimally invasive surgery skills tests. You will also act as the lead operations specialist for surgical and interventional procedure simulators, providing support to faculty instructors and all classes of learners in the customization and use of surgical skills and anatomy across the curriculum in all surgical specialties. The SSL Manager will supervise a minimum of one lab assistant (simulation tech/education specialist) technician, and two work study students, and will be responsible for recruiting, and supervising all educational program volunteers and temporary staff. Pay Range: $66,560.00 – $137,600.00 annually.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field (i.e. education, business operations, or related technical field) • 3+ years of management experience • Experience working in an operating room environment, knowledge of operating room equipment, tools and setup • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with technical, administrative, clinical, and academic personnel at all levels both inside the University and in other institutions, agencies and corporations. • Ability to identify and prioritize new opportunities and unmet needs, to initiate selected projects for the enhancement of Surgical Education Technology Programs, including the Surgical Education Technology Programs AEI and the Surgical Science Laboratory, and to manage projects to completion. • Ability to understand a wide variety of technologies in order to prioritize and allocate resources across Surgical Education Technology Programs and Surgical Science Laboratory projects. • Working knowledge of engineering and technology research and development and management methods and processes. • Working knowledge of government contracting practices and regulations as they impact technology research programs. • Ability to write technical proposals and reports • Understand principals of curriculum development and course design and learner assessment • Ability to plan, analyze and manage budgets for ongoing operations and grant proposals. • Work well in a dynamic, highly changeable, multidisciplinary research, education, and clinical support environment. • Intellectual generalist with ability to understand significance of surgical and interventional technology advances. • Strong computer skills with MS applications and ability to learn new applications quickly. • Knowledge of UCLA policies and practices for fund management, purchasing, facilities, HR, travel, lab safety, etc.
