The Department of Neurology is seeking a Laboratory Manager.  Under the general supervision of a faculty investigator, the Lab Manager is responsible for overall functioning of the Brain Signatures Lab (www.brainsigns.net), running advanced assays, compliance with regulations, interfacing with the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and Office of Research Administration, training lab staff, maintaining the lab database and integrity of biospecimen inventory.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities


Project Management & Implementation

  • Assist with development of SOPs for all research related activities and staff.
  • Provide overall management of day-to-day research activities and staff.
  • Prioritize and optimize staff effort on sponsored studies by regularly assessing changing workloads based on current and anticipated active study needs.
  • Run and/or organizes internal and external meetings, collaborating among various internal collaborators, national research groups, national societies, non-profits, industry, and faculty members of other institutions.
  • Assist the study Principal Investigator (PI) in communications with Johns Hopkins Office of Research Administration (ORA) for contracting, agreements, and managing relationships with internal and external collaborators.
  • Assist with the maintenance of a centralized listing of past, active, and future clinical research projects.
  • Manage, support, coordinate and implement study specific tasks as required including recruitment, data collection, biospecimen shipping and tracking, regulatory submissions and site coordination and training for multi-center projects where JH serves as the bisopecimen core.
  • Develop and update/maintain study documents including protocols, amendments, case report forms, SOPs, lab manuals, training documents and regulatory materials using an electronic lab notebook (Lab folder).
  • Maintain the biospecimen inventory housed in -80C freezers using Lockbox LIMS and freezer monitoring using the Imonnit remote temperature monitoring system.
  • Maintain and update the clinical registry using the electronic data capture system - REDCap.
  • Supervises and maintain lab inventory levels of reagents, kits and chemicals.
  • Supervises and maintain logs of weekly/monthly instrument calibration and validation protocols and maintain detailed logs of each instrument.
  • Participate in a rotating schedule to monitor freezer temperatures include weekend and holiday assignments and the need to come in when on call in case of an emergency.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Hire and supervise research staff including research technologists, research coordinators, research specialists, graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Orient and train new research staff on Hopkins-specific workflow to include appropriate practical shadowing and field training.
  • Provide continuing education and training including revisions/updates on regulatory policies, innovative research tools, general professional development and certifications to maintain a highly skilled and dedicated research team. Serve as an internal and external resource in a team environment and mentor junior research coordinator(s).


Regulatory

  • Implement a robust quality management system to ensure compliance.
  • Manage and monitor adherence to local, state, federal entities, GCP, IRB and other applicable regulatory requirements for study team and sites part of multi-center studies.
  • Provide initial and continuing training to staff and track School of Medicine required education requirements to maintain compliance.
  • Supervise staff and assist PI as needed on IRB and Office of Research Administration submissions to ensure compliance.
  • Serve as the primary resource for all regulatory related matters.
  • Interface with industry partners on regulatory submissions.


Finance

  • Coordinate with ORA on budget development with sponsors.
  • Submit reimbursements on behalf of the PI.
  • In collaboration with the Neurology grants team, assist with drafting budgets and subcontracts and supporting documents for grant submission.


Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • High level of organizational skills.
  • Experience in managing laboratory research projects and supervising personnel.
  • Knowledge of physiology, neuroscience, and biochemistry.
  • Knowledge of biosafety and GLP/GCP
  • Ability to operate and maintain laboratory equipment in a specialty lab.
  • Strong analytical background is highly desirable.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, interpersonal, and training skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to work with many different faculty members, postdoctoral fellows, and technicians.
  • Ability to make independent judgments and to act on decisions on a regular basis.
  • Ability to work on own initiative and with limited direction.
  • Ability to prioritize own work and to multi-task.
  • Experience coordinating, conducting and managing studies.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
  • Five years related experience, including proven technical knowledge and laboratory experience.
  • Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree, with related graduate research.
  • Experience running ELISAs, Western Blots, DNA extraction.
  • Proficiency in the use of common software applications including databases (REDCap, etc.), regulatory applications (eIRB, etc.), clinical computer systems (Epic, etc.), spreadsheets, and word processing.
  • Experience in budget generation, contractual process and financial management of clinical trials preferred.
  • Proficiency in writing SOPs, technical and programmatic reports.
