Laboratory Equipment Specialist - Facilities Management

The Laboratory Equipment Specialist provides equipment technical support services for multiple laboratories on and off campus that includes preventative maintenance, diagnostics and corrective maintenance, new equipment utility compatibility, failure analysis and course of action to ensure minimum impact to research studies, equipment setups, teardowns and storage configurations.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manages and provides vendor recommended preventative maintenance in multiple laboratories across many facilities on and off campus to ensure predictable and reliable system operations.
  • Evaluates, provides services to, and seeks opportunity to minimize down time for maintenance and failed equipment repair based on assessment evaluations to reduce disruption to operations.
  • Monitors equipment alarms and executes corrective action to correct faulty equipment conditions prior to adversely affecting research experiments or damaging stored research samples.  Provides “first response” equipment failure diagnostics to determine the nature of an equipment failure, a course of action for repairs and to evaluate the impact to active research environments.
  • Oversees and facilitates equipment inventory and tracking to maintain department and lab supply needs.  Manages unused, underused and stored laboratory equipment inventories for reassignment or disposal.  Tracks laboratory equipment life cycles and anticipates budget requirements for capital equipment replacement purchases.
  • Provides technical direction for equipment setups, teardowns and relocations to minimize any chance of equipment damage from improper handling.  Performs laboratory equipment utility requirement evaluations and provides recommendations for compatibility.  Performs laboratory equipment layout and compatibility reviews for new equipment placement.
  • Provides generator testing equipment support services to maintain research experiment integrity and preclude sensitive electronic equipment damage from electrical system transitions.
  • Manages shared laboratory equipment service contracts/purchase orders for scope adherence and fiscal compliance.
  • Provides service contractors and vendors with building access and monitors work performance in compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Provides compressed gas tank services for laboratory equipment experiment setups and teardowns. Monitors switches bank and replaces compressed gas tanks for shared laboratory compressed gas distribution systems.
  • Responsible for maintaining ability to operate newly introduced devices and equipment and able to continuously update expertise to address and support evolving technology and equipment.
  • Responsible for training department staff on specialized laboratory equipment, skills and knowledge.

Education:

  • High School Diploma/G.E.D., required.
  • Vocational/Technical Diploma, Trade school certification or Military experience highly preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Technology, Engineering, Electronics, or related field.

Experience:

  • 3 years of experience in engineering technology or equipment repair and maintenance in a Clinical, Military, and/or Research environment.
