The Biology Department is seeking a Laboratory Coordinator who will work under the supervision of the Principal Investigator (Pl) and senior laboratory staff and supports research projects involving the cell and molecular biology of lipids primarily in zebrafish. This individual will be expected to design and carry out laboratory experiments, working independently and also collaborate with individuals in the lab, in the Biology Department or from other institutions. The successful candidate should have some expertise working with zebrafish, and some molecular biology background. This person should be able to conduct experiments with minimal guidance from Pl. This person will coordinate projects within the lab, helping the Pl to monitor the progress of individual projects in lab. These efforts will require the prioritization of multiple projects. This position requires vigilant implementation of scientific protocols that includes performing specialized and routine procedures, maintaining equipment, assisting with other lab duties, such as supply and equipment inventory, and ordering, and providing documents/information as needed to Pl.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Overall organization of the laboratory and its personnel.
  • Lab-related scheduling tasks, such as lab meeting and joint group meeting schedules.
  • Perform scientific assays/experiments relevant to specific projects.
  • Perform preliminary data analysis, summarize results, and report data to the Pl as well as present findings in laboratory meetings.
  • Supervise undergraduate workers.
  • Assign some common lab tasks to other laboratory members as needed.
  • Oversight and maintaining all Farber lab common lines, including the transgenic and mutant fish lines.
  • Receive fish and reagents from other labs and prepare fish and reagents for shipping to collaborators, other labs, and repository agencies. Prepare Material Transfer Agreements as needed related to these activities.
  • Onboard and train undergraduate researchers and new lab members.
  • Administrative oversight of the laboratory. Ensure biosafety procedures are appropriately set-up and enforced, reagents are appropriately stored and evaluated, research equipment is maintained, and logs are kept, common lab spaces are organized and maintained, and laboratory personnel receives training and is following procedures.
  • Ordering supplies and reagents, monitor inventory levels, orders materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures, logs orders upon receipt.
  • Prepares solutions, reagents, and stains following standard laboratory formulas and procedures.
  • Uses sterile techniques to avoid contaminating lab experiments. Prepares (clean & sterilize) glassware and instruments used in research experiments.
  • Exchanges non-routine information using good oral and written communication skills. The qualified candidate must demonstrate the ability to communicate professionally, with all levels of staff.


Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrated proficiency in windows-based word processing, internet, and spreadsheet. Ability to work independently, as a team member, and under direct supervision.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work with a diverse research staff and with confidential materials.
  • Ability to follow protocols, policies and procedures and respond appropriately when presented with novel situations.
  • Demonstrated excellent record of attendance and punctuality.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or graduation equivalent and some college coursework in the Biological Sciences, with Bachelor's Degree preferred.
  • One year of related laboratory experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Science or Engineering.

Starting Salary Range: $17.00 - $23.50 - $30.00 HRLY (Commensurate with experience) 
Employee group: Full Time 
Schedule: M-F, 8-5 and some evenings when needed.
