Department Description: The Schumer lab (https://schumerlab.com) has a position for a motivated research assistant at the Lab Assistant I level with interests in genomics, evolutionary, or molecular biology. Our lab focuses on understanding the role of hybridization in evolutionary processes. Research in the lab combines experimental and computational approaches with a particular focus on the genetics of natural populations. This position will provide opportunities to learn a range of molecular biology and genomic techniques and offers a unique opportunity to collaborate with evolutionary, molecular, and development biologists.

Position Summary: The Department of Biology is seeking a Lab Assistant 1. The Lab Assistant 1 will work under general supervision of members of the Schumer lab and must possess and demonstrate a positive outlook on continuous process improvement efforts while maintaining a team-focused mindset. The position will support ongoing data collection and projects in lab - clear communication and excellent organizational skills are crucial. Past experience in molecular biology is an added benefit for this position.

This is a 100% FTE, 1 year fixed term, non-exempt position with possibility of renewal. This position will be based on the Stanford campus.

CORE DUTIES:

● Make routine media, reagents, buffers, and plates. Sterilize, aliquot.

● Perform basic record-keeping e.g., recording usage of laboratory equipment and materials, performing data entry, photocopying, logging and labeling specimens and samples.

● May collect samples, process, store, and ship non-hazardous materials.

● Order supplies such as reagents (chemicals, agar, etc.) and glassware as appropriate to meet needs.

● Perform miscellaneous duties such as organizing supply storage, assisting in moving laboratory furniture or equipment, disposing of unwanted equipment as needed.

● Assist higher level lab employee by holding animals or performing other manual tasks such as setting up apparatus.

● May provide backup for an absent Glassware Washer.

● Provide basic care of laboratory animals, including feeding and watering animals as well as cleaning cages or tanks, according to standard operating procedures or research protocols.

● Record food, water, urine or other animal-related measurements.

● May perform any of the duties described in the Laboratory Glassware Washer specification or other duties as assigned

● Adhere to safety rules.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Minimum Education and Experience Required

Some familiarity with a laboratory environment helpful but not required. Will

be trained to do this work.

Minimum Qualifications

● In addition to the qualifications listed for the Laboratory Glassware Washer, these

employees must have demonstrated initiative and good judgment.

● Required to perform work with a minimum of error and less day-to-day supervision.

● Basic Arithmetic skills

In addition, preferred requirements include:

● Coursework or research experience in Biology.

● Past experience working in a molecular lab environment.

● Past experience working with vertebrate animals.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work occurs in a research laboratory environment. Depending on research, Lab Assistants may work in the vicinity of animals, chemicals, gasses, or hazardous materials. Expected to follow all safety requirements and procedures, including wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) if required.

The expected pay range for this position is $27.18 (Step 1) to $32.86 (Step 10) per hour. Placement in the pay range is subject to the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
