About the Department
The Research Units of the Department of Poultry Science serve to provide the necessary animal resources, associated support facilities and support activities for poultry research, teaching activities, and extension events. Faculty and staff from the Departments of Poultry Science, Animal Science, Entomology, Biological and Agricultural Engineering, Food Science and several departments from the College of Veterinary Medicine regularly conduct research or collect research materials at these units. Program areas include physiology, immunology, toxicology, nutrition, genetics, embryology, and environmental management.
Essential Job Duties
As a Research Operations Supervisor, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the seamless execution of our experimental endeavors. Your responsibilities will encompass a spectrum of operational tasks, from meticulous animal care and biosecurity measures to facility maintenance and comprehensive data collection. Your keen eye for detail will be instrumental in guaranteeing the integrity of our experimental protocols through thorough observations and precise record-keeping.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the operational intricacies of experimental activities, ensuring adherence to established protocols and standards.
  • Provide hands-on supervision and guidance to staff involved in experimentation, fostering a culture of excellence and accountability.
  • Manage facility assignments for faculty members, optimizing resource allocation to support research initiatives effectively.
  • Conduct training sessions for staff, equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in their roles.
  • Collaborate closely with faculty members to tailor experimental protocols according to available resources and facility capabilities.
  • Serve as a crucial point of contact for emergency situations, swiftly mobilizing resources and implementing contingency plans as needed.

Other Responsibilities
  • Schedule repairs and maintenance of equipment and facilities on the research unit. Assess facility and equipment needs
  • Help reassign unit employees to different locations as projects dictate.
  • Ensure that all expenditures are approved before being made to maintain fiscal responsibility.
  • Monitor the daily experimental duties checklists and post new ones.
  • Aid in training new employees in correct research methodology to ensure that all data collection is accurate.

Qualifications


Minimum Experience/Education

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Other Required Qualifications
  • Must be able to read research protocols and follow written instructions
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations with and without a calculator
  • Must have good manual dexterity, read small numbers in low light situations, walk and climb with 50 pounds, and be able to move a wheeled box containing 1000 pounds of feed
Preferred Qualifications
  • Farm or laboratory animal experience and/or mechanical, electrical, or computer experience
  • Experience with handling commercial poultry, livestock, or laboratory animals is preferred
  • N.C. Pesticide Applicator’s License is desirable.
