Position Summary
Job Description
Rotating weekend and holiday work is required.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide and document daily husbandry care to multiple species, including rabbits, non-human primates, canines, and rodents. Care includes the provision of feed, water, clean cages, and enrichment.
- Sanitize and maintain rodent colony rooms according to the schedule, to include sweeping and mopping animal quarters and procedure rooms, disinfecting all areas in room, rotating animal cages, cleaning large equipment, and stocking room supplies.
- Observe animals daily for clinical or behavioral signs of illness, and provide treatments as directed by veterinary staff. Report findings to the supervisor, facility manager or DCM veterinary staff in a timely fashion.
- Correctly handle and dispose of hazardous wastes according to standard operating procedures.
- Perform additional duties as required by the supervisor/manager/department, which may include hands-on training of junior-level technicians.
Working Conditions
Must be able to lift 50 lbs. and pass a pre-employment physical exam.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate degree.
- AALAS certification (LAT).
- Three years of experience in laboratory animal care.
- Ability to comprehend written and spoken terms used in a biomedical research environment.
- Ability to comprehend and follow SOPs and written instructions from veterinary, supervisory and research staff.
- Ability to flexibly cover husbandry in specialized situations or multiple animal facilities, including swing coverage for absent co-workers.
- Conscientious attitude and concern for quality.
Required Qualifications
- Associate degree or an equivalent of two years of relevant laboratory animal research facility experience.
- Obtain Purina certification within six months.
- Obtain AALAS certification at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician level (ALAT) within two years.

Salary Range
$15.92 - $23.07 / Hourly
The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
