Laboratory Animal Caretaker

 

Required Qualifications:  As per Civil Service Standards and Specifications. There are no minimum education or experience qualifications for appointment to this title. Must comply with all DLAR policies and procedures.

Preferred Qualifications:  Experience performing animal husbandry duties in a commercial or research setting.

Brief Description of Duties:  The Laboratory Animal Caretaker will take care of lab animals in order to help research work.

  • Cleaning, changing cages, bottles, scrubbing pens, feed/water animals, observe/report sick/dead/injured animals; sweep, mop, house and squeegee rooms;
  • Sanitize and buff rooms;
  • Insure cage cards are filled out properly;
  • Take daily census of animal population and fill out prescribed forms;
  • Operate automatic cage washers;
  • Take garbage out;
  • Wash laundry;      
  • Pair groups of animals for mating under supervision;
  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Special Notes:  These are full-time positions, 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  Weekend work may be required.  FLSA Nonexempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.  Internal and external search to occur simultaneously.  Mandatory rehire roster candidates have preference.
