Job Summary:
The Department of Agricultural and Life Sciences welcomes applications for 12-month full
time salaried position for a Laboratory Technician II to provide support to the biology
department faculty and animal house.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Operate and maintain basic laboratory equipment.
• Support faculty with the coordination and preparation of lab courses.
• Set up basic laboratory equipment and solutions for classroom use. This includes
moving equipment to the required classroom, set up and calibration, as well as stock
reagents and solution preparation.
• Assist undergraduate students and faculty in using equipment.
• Maintain data records of equipment use, and comply with chemical and biohazard
safety standards through the proper handling, notification and disposal of broken
glass and potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents.
• Maintain chemical inventory database and safety data sheets (SDSs) for handling
and disposal of potentially hazardous chemical and biological materials.
• Animal husbandry duties for rodents, snakes, and other animals kept at CSU (feed,
change cages, wash cages, etc.)
• Daily and weekend checks of animals – (animal health, feed, water, room
temperatures, etc.)
• Order supplies for the Animal Facility – feed, bedding, animals, cleaning supplies,
etc.
IACUC coordinator:
o Schedule IACUC meetings
o Maintain files – meeting minutes, correspondence, protocols
• Assure compliance with Animal Facility and Protocols are in compliance with
PHS/NIH, USDA, and AAALAC policies.
• Greenhouse maintenance. Monitoring room temperature and equipment, plant care
(watering, pruning, insect control, planting)
• Supervise students in research and work study students.
• Prepare biology labs for classes.
• Inventory and maintain supplies for biology labs.
• Carry out duties and responsibilities with limited supervision. Makes decisions and
established work priorities on essential procedure oriented operations.
• Other related duties may be assigned as needed by the Department Chair.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Experience with, basic maintenance and trouble-shooting of laboratory equipment
used in classroom setting.
• Understands and follows established standard operating procedures or protocols
and utilizes aseptic technique to perform laboratory tests and/or experiments.
• Knowledge of biological and chemical hygiene, including universal safety
precautions to protect self and co-workers from chemical hazards (health, physical,
and environmental) and bio-hazardous materials.
• Knowledge of hazardous waste management, including storage, transport and
disposal of hazardous waste materials.
• Ability to prepare solutions, reagents, and stains following standard laboratory
formulas and procedures in conjunction with equipment use and maintenance.
• Familiarity with interfacing with vendors, requisition input, purchase orders and
tracking using Banner software for grant budgeting.
• Manage vendor accounts for equipment purchase and maintenance for the
Department.
• Comply with and promote a culture of safety within the Department and the College.
• Good oral and written communication skills.
Minimum Qualifications
• B.S. in biology, animal science, or commensurate laboratory and equipment
experience.
• M.S. in biology a plus.
