Lab Aide I

University of Tennessee Extension - Soil, Plant & Pest Center

(Nashville, TN)

 

 

Duties/Responsibilities:

 

The UT Soil, Plant, & Pest Center Administrative Assistant II is directly responsible to the Laboratory Director.  This is a part time position with an 8 hour per week base appointment.  Hours can increase as workload allows during the soil ad forage testing season.  Total hours are capped per year at 750.

 

Duties include:

Sample preparation 

- Opening samples from walk-ins, mail, and courier services.

- Arranging submission sheets with samples and payment.

- Logging samples in with appropriate lab number.

- Drying and grinding soil, plant, and forage samples

- Weighing or scooping samples for analysis.

- Cleaning lab-ware for future use.

 

Sample analysis with supervision

- Help make chemical reagents used in extracting or measuring soils, plants, and forages.

- Extracting, filtering, digesting, diluting, bringing to volume.

- Lining up samples for analysis on instruments.

- Assist in measuring pH, soluble salts, organic matter, texture, nutrients. 

- Weigh forage samples for dry matter weights.

 

Office tasks as needed.

- Receipting

- Entering sample information and sample data

- Folding reports and placing in mail

 



Qualifications

 

Minimum/Required Qualifications (include education, experience, skills & abilities, licenses & certifications):

·        Must have a high school diploma, or equivalent.

·        Must have a valid driver’s license.

·        Must be reliable and punctual.

 

Preferred/Desired Qualifications:

·        Additional education beyond high school diploma preferred.

·        At least one college level class in a chemical, physical, geology, or biological science lab with a grade of B or higher. 

·        Experience in a private or public laboratory is also preferred.
