Job Summary:

The Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (WVDL) is seeking a temporary Lab Technician to work in our Necropsy/Histology laboratory. WVDL is a high-volume laboratory that offers a broad range of veterinary diagnostic testing services for the State of Wisconsin and the country.
The primary role of the position is to work closely with the microbiologists and assist the pathologists on the necropsy floor. Training is provided to help you gain skills in both necropsy and histology. The tasks relevant to this position include, but are not limited to, performing a routine cleaning of equipment, learning safety operations procedures (SOP), and involvement with environmental monitoring.
The successful applicant for this position will be interested in learning about animal anatomy, disease diagnostics, forensic casework, and histological techniques. The Lab Technician appointment provides a great opportunity to start a career in the field and to be trained by an exceptional team. The appointment is for one year.


Responsibilities:
Performs routine support in a laboratory to support diagnostic or research work. May calibrate and maintain equipment and creates and/or updates records. May handle administrative and logistical tasks.
  • 5% Uses, maintains, calibrates, and sets up lab equipment and apparatuses according to established policies and procedures and documents activities
  • 40% Coordinates and participates in a variety of routine technical duties by providing assistance to research and/or laboratory staff in testing and experiments
  • 20% Performs quality control, acknowledges documents, performs document reviews and/or writes and revises documents as assigned
  • 15% Completes and acknowledges trainings
  • 20% Sets up, prepares, and cleans laboratory glassware, instruments, equipment, and laboratory work spaces

Tasks:
  • Review accession paperwork and set up cases in LIMS database
  • Assist Pathologists by bagging tissues, taking notes, or taking photos
  • Perform/Assist with disposal services such as incineration, rendering, digestion, composting, and cremation
  • Utilize different staining methods (general H&E as well as special stains)
  • Trim, process, embed, and section tissues
  • Cleaning and setup of laboratory spaces
  • Digitize slides, create cases, manage cases, assist with creating client accounts
  • Utilize the GT450 slide scanner, prepare electronic cases, and manage cases
  • Work on projects of interest such as research, poster, or other professional development opportunities to further growth within career-related interests
