Job Description

The Thompson laboratory in the School of Neuroscience at Virginia Tech is seeking a motivated part-time laboratory technician to assist with ongoing research activities. This role involves supporting projects that study the effects of thyroid hormone signaling changes on the brain development of Xenopus laevis tadpoles. The technician will work under the guidance of the laboratory director, Dr. Chris Thompson, and will gain hands-on experience in a variety of experimental procedures. The ability to work independently will be developed on the job. This is an hourly position requiring a commitment of 20 hours per week.


Required Qualifications

A strong interest in neuroscience research;
Willingness to learn animal handling and laboratory procedures;
Basic familiarity with biological laboratory environments and fundamental chemistry.


Preferred Qualifications

Experience in the use of animals in research, especially with animal handling and principles of anesthesia;
Experience with histology in neural tissues, RNA processing and analysis;
Experience using a microscope such as confocal imaging;
Basic knowledge of molecular neuroscience and familiarity with standard laboratory equipment, including centrifuges and PCR;
Experience with aquatic animals, transfection of plasmid DNA into vertebrate cells, and live animal imaging;
BS or equivalent experience in Neuroscience, Biology, or a related discipline.
